So this was our practice math problem today. I will analyze everything (which is a lot) that was wrong with it and give a better example. So. The picture.

Number 1. What swim team is this?? Only eight swimmers? I mean, at least try to mimic the school's team for the sake of school pride.

Number 2. My teacher said the two swimmers that would be selected were brothers. And then she referred to them as "older brother" and "younger brother". No. First, do not refer to them as older and younger. Give them names. They are people too! Second, if they are brothers, chances are they will not be swimming the same event. In all my years of competitive swimming (4) I have never meet a sibling pair that swims the same event. So that's unlikely.

Number 3. You do not "select" swimmers to be in specific heats. No. They are number one, chosen by the coach to swim in a specific event, and number two, sorted by time. That way, in a 50, you don't have like, a swimmer who goes a 22, and a swimmer who goes a 45.

Number 4. This problem is weighted because say the event is a 50. Maybe one of the swimmers is a sprinter. So they could be in the last heat. Then, maybe one does fly. So they could be in the first heat, or, one could be swimming Jv and the other varsity.

Number 5. You almost never have two swimmers in the same heat, except for club meets, at sections, and at state. No. You have 3 swimmers if it is a dual meet, or 1 if it is conference.

Here is an example of a better question, using the Sparks (my swim team) as an example.

The Sparks swim team has 10 swimmers who have not swarm the 500, Ursula, Kira, Amelia, Amelia, Kaylee, Alivia, Michaela, Katie, maya, and grace. Coach Katy needs to choose 3 swimmers to swim in the JV 500 tomorrow in their swim meet against the Hum-Wow team. How many ways can the swimmers be selected?

I'm very proud of my analysis of this. I was typing furiously for a good ten minutes. Let me know in the comments about your social injustices with swimming.
