Thirteen Years Later

Chapter 1: Wardrobe Change

"Lucy! The bus comes in five minutes and you still have not eaten! Come on down!" Mom's voice called out from where I guessed to be the bottom of the stairs.

"Alright, give me a moment." I called back. I turned back to where I was, sitting on the bathroom cabinet with one foot in the sink blasting cold water over my toes while the other foot dangled down to the floor.

Before my mother had called out to me, I was busy trying to get rid of the rats nest on my head that people called "hair". Ten years of owning up to long hair and I still have not figured out a system to keep my hair "socially worthy". Instead I spend half an hour at least every morning trying to brush out the tangles and the old hair spray from the night before.

Today was no different. As always my arm that was going through the tangles with a brush was sore so I dropped the brush and grabbed a makeup brush.

Turning back to the mirror I stopped. Starring back at me through the cheap old mirror was a sixteen year old girl with the darkest shadows under her blue eyes, brunette hair that still resembled the housing of a bird and a hallow face. Some people called this style of a person "willow" of "whimsical". I called it "Girl-From-The-Ring"esc.

"Lucy!" Mom's voice called out again. I slammed the faucet off and jumped off the counter, making sure to throw the makeup brush at the mirror as I walked past my reflection.

Screw morning routines

Bounding down the stairs, I was met by my mother who had an apron on and pancakes in a napkin in her hands that were outstretched to me. My mother was always one to try and be the classic-cliché-stereotype-white-suburban mother whenever she could which explained the apron and her want to make blueberry pancakes at 6:30 in the fucking morning.

But although she did make the amazing breakfast, she was not always the bubbly- cliché mother. Judging by her expression when she saw me, I still had not really made myself presentable for school.

"Lucy I get that you're going through a phase, but Jesus Christ please do something to your hair." I gave her a glare before grabbing the pancakes from her hand and walking into the living room where my Harley Quinn backpack sat waiting for me. My mother followed me and stopped at the door.

"Or not. I'm sure hobo sheik is back in style." I casted her another look which she returned.

"Look Lucy your brother is coming home in a week from college. I need you to make sure you get all your crap out of his room before he finds out what you and Jade did in there." At the mention of Jade, my mood perked up a little bit. I took a bite out of the blueberry pancake and swung my backpack over my shoulder.

"Can I bring Jade over to help me clean up?" I asked. Mom made a noise in her throat.

"When have you ever asked to have Jade over?" I started for the door.

"Well normally mom, she just shows up at the window or sits in my room magically without either of us letting her in. Honestly though, don't you like a warning before she shows up? " I asked. "I sure would every time Elle comes over." I opened the door and turned back to my mother.

She was still leaning on the door to the living room in her robe and apron. Only this time she was flexing and then arching her foot into the wooden floor; the automatic mode all dancers get into when they keep their feet stationary for too long.

"Elle's coming over today after rehearsal. Fair warning." She said with a smile. I smirked back at her and waved before closing the door on her and walking out to the front lawn to await the "bus".
