It was currently 10 pm and Mark and jack were lounging on the balcony, counting the stars scattered around the galaxy and trying to form shapes from them.
A lot of stories were told and a lot of shits and giggles were being had. Jack's legs were entangled with Mark's, his head on the older man's chest, Mark's arm wrapped around the Irishman's shoulder and his fire of a head was resting on Jack's head. It was a peaceful night, the sound of the city buzzing below their perspective. Mark slowly intertwines his hand within Jack's and leaves a small peck on the greenhaired man's forehead.
"What are you thinking about?" He asks. Jack doesn't answer for some time; he only hums contentedly. He's been mulling over something for a long while, and is starting to feel like maybe tonight would be the right time to talk about it.
He and Mark had been dating for a good amount of time, and it's inevitable that every long-lasting couple reaches this conversation at some point. Taking a deep breath, he whispers, "what if we got married?"
Mark's heart skips a beat. He was hoping this wouldn't happen, but somehow, he knew it would. "I don't know, Jack. We'd be married, I guess." At the word 'married' his nose crinkles slightly, which makes him thankful that Jack isn't looking his way.
"What do you mean by 'I guess'? Come on, can't you imagine our future together? Maybe we'd adopt a kid? Can you imagine how beautiful the wedding day could be?" Jack continues rambling on, unknowingly annoying Mark.
Mark wasn't ready for such a commitment. Him and Jack have been together for 3 years and in Marks point of view, that wasn't enough time. What if it didn't work out? He didn't want them to end up in YouTube's biggest gossip magazine and probably DramaAlert. He just wasn't ready for all the downsides, even if there were the smallest of chances of them actually happening.
After a few more minutes of Jack's overly-enthusiastic speech, Mark cuts him off, shuffling so he's sitting upright, and his legs are detangled from his partner's. "We can't get married. Not yet," he says sternly.
Mark doesn't need to see Jack's face to know he's frowning. "And why's that?"
Fumbling for some kind of answer, any type of answer, he hesitates. "Well, we... We're still popular, and I'd rather we waited until our careers died down a bit." It's not the best excuse, he knows, but it'll do.
"Mark, that's..." Jack sits up right too, spinning around to look at his boyfriend's frightened expression. "That's just ridiculous. We're in the first generation of YouTubers, who knows how long it'll be before we fade from the media! We could be fifty by then! I don't know about you, but I don't want to wait until I'm fifty to be married."
Without thinking, Mark mutters, "well, I don't want to be married at all." Shocked and hurt, Jack takes a shaky step back. "You... You don't want to marry me? Don't you love me?" Jack's tone is hurt and though Mark gathers this, he can't change what path he's taken.
"I don't want to marry anyone, really. It's not you. I just... I don't see a point". Jack looks at his partner with the most heartbreaking pout ever. His eyes went from hopeful to gloomy as fast as sonic on a slip an' slide.
