It was a little more than two months since Hogwarts had opened again, but for Draco it felt like six.
The events of the past months were still unrealistic, and Draco had a hard time figuring out what he imagined and what was real. Sometimes, when he walked around the empty parts of the castle on his own, or when he lay awake during the night thinking, he wondered if Harry was even real.
If the Harry he knows even existed, or that he is a fake illusion of Draco's mind, someone that Draco's mind wants Potter to be.
But he only has to glance at the books he used for his research on Horcruxes to realize everything is real. That it is really happening.
When he first came back to school, he was depressed, or at least, he felt the beginning of a depression. But before he had the chance to sink deeper, he got a distraction from his self-pity.
He should be happy that their relationship would be a little less complicated in a week, but he dreaded the moment. Scared for rejection, disgust, pity, and most of all he was scared for Harry leaving him.
That was his biggest insecurity, the main reason why he didn't want their relationship to come out yet.
It was just so fragile, when Harry would have to choose between his best friends and Draco, he would definitely choose his best friends.
If they waited with telling his friends for a while, their relationship would be stronger and Draco would stand a fair chance.
But they just didn't have the time, the war wasn't over yet, and although every single one of his actions gave him flashbacks of his mistakes in the past, Draco would go on, to do something useful and to give the world a valid reason to forgive him for his past mistakes.
The world could possibly forgive him, but Draco could never. The screams of innocent muggleborns were carved into his mind, and the crimson colored blood of his victims dripped behind his eyes.
Draco could never forget, never forgive, but it would help him to move past, and that's even more than he could've asked for.
