Sam

I sat up in the bed and groaned. I had been here for two hours, aimlessly staring at the ceiling and waiting for sleep. But I guess that that wasn’t going to happen. My headache hadn’t gone away, and I could feel the buzzing building up in my mind again. I set the image of the pendant spinning in my mind, but the buzzing didn’t stop. I got up, dismissing it as part of my headache, and went into the nearest bathroom. I splashed my face with cold water to wake myself up, before pressing my face into a warm, soft towel, sighing. I put the towel down, swept my hair back, into a ponytail, and made my way back to the control room.

I noticed that Bruce and Clint were gone the second I stepped inside. I frowned, walking over to one of the computers. Tony glanced up at me, sighing.

‘Hulk and Legolas have gone to get some sleep. We decided to take up watch-hours.’ he explained, noticing my confusion. I nodded, turning back to face the computer. I typed for a while, setting up a few more scans of the area. When they had finished, I opened up the live-feed satellite map, and took a step back, looking over at the main screen.

‘Camera’s picking anything up?’ I asked the room, and Tony shook his head, sighing.

‘Everything’s completely quiet.’ He said, before pointing at the screen. ‘They’re very good at hiding, wherever they are. I’ll give them that. And the glitch spreads out over the whole state, with no origin point that we’ve found yet, so that’s a dead-end too.’ He grumbled. I noticed that everyone looked fed up and ready to give up too. Not that I could blame them. We had been at this for hours, without a proper break. I sighed, and walked across the room to one of the other computers.

‘Well then, we’ll just have to think of something else, wont we?’ I said, trying to be cheery about it. I sighed heavily, not able to decide if the buzzing was high blood-pressure, or just me being dizzy, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Steve swung around on his chair, looking back at me, his eyes warm as he smiled a small smile.

‘How’s your head?’ he asked softly. I shrugged, glancing back at him.

‘A little better, no worse.’ I said, maybe a little too quickly. It really was the exact same, if not worse. I was beginning to realise why the buzzing was so familiar, it had just been a while since I had felt it.

Alex.

And if I could feel that building up, even with the pendant spinning in my mind, then the chances were, that it never really worked in the first place. I turned around, leaning back, against the desk, and sighed.

‘Are Thor and Loki going to turn up again?’ I asked. Steve shrugged, frowning.
