I was going to wait the hour and a bit until tomorrow to post this, but I need sleep. So, here you go!

Sam

I took deep breaths, my face contorted in pain, blood still oozing from my wounds. I could see this going very wrong. Even if Tony and Steve could get to me, there was no way that I’d make it to the infirmary, let alone until one of the medic team could help me. It just wasn’t going to work, no matter what way we tried it.

I pulled at the handcuffs, as the waves slammed into the wall beside her. I was desperate to get out of them. If I really was going to die here, now, I wanted to hold Steve one last time. I wanted to be free. I wanted to feel safe, in his arms.

I heard Tony’s repulsors and the sound of Steve’s shield rebounding somewhere down the hallway, awakening a sense of desperate hope in me, causing the tears to boil up and over once more. I knew that the hope was futile, but I couldn’t stop it. The sounds got closer and called I out to them.

‘Steve! Tony!’ I screamed desperately. I heard someone running towards her, and Steve’s head appeared in the gap above the beam, where the door had bent away.

‘Sam! Just hold on!’ he called, his eyes shining with worry. Just as he did, a grenade dropped from the hole above me, landing a few feet away from me, against the wall. I closed my eyes, and gulped. This was it.

Tony

‘Steve, move.’ I ordered from behind me, my voice echoing metallically, as Steve’s eyes went wide, seeing the grenade, but he still stepped back as my repulsors charged up. Just as they did, the grenade exploded, blowing a hole in the wall, and sending Sam flying out into the torrential currents. She just managed to grab onto a broken pipe as I blasted through the beam. Steve ran over to her, and almost slipped, falling into the current, but I lunged, and caught him. As I held him inside the ship, Steve reached out and grabbed Sam’s slippery, wet hand, as tears of fear and realisation began streaming down her face.

She shook her head as Steve looked at her, with the saddest look either of us had ever seen on his face. My mask flipped up as I held Steve back from being pulled in by the huge current threatening to drag Sam under and away.

The helicarrier creaked and groaned, as it tried to stay afloat. Sam grimaced, the rough sea tearing at the deep wounds at her shoulder, side and leg. She looked around helplessly, praying for someone to come in and help. But she knew there was nothing we could do. Sam’s foot was caught in a piece of the wall, which was trying to wash away. There was no way that we would all get out of this alive. I could see it in her eyes, that glimmer of hope, but not for herself. I knew what she was thinking; there was a way that both myself and Steve could survive, and live on.

Sam swallowed heavily, looking up at Steve, who looked back at her, his eyes filled with denial.

‘Steve,’ she choked out, tears streaming down her face. She shook her head, and coughed, before looking up at him, her eyes sad, but strong. ‘Steve, my foot’s caught in a huge piece of the wall, and it’s going to drag us all down if you don’t let go.’ She said softly, her voice only just carrying over the torrents of water. ‘I love you.’ she said. Steve shook his head at her, gripping her slippery hand tight. Why did that sound like a goodbye? Sam let out a single, choking sob, as she slid out of Steve’s grip, washed away immediately by the raging sea.

Steve lunged after her, held back only by my strong arm around his waist.

‘Sam!’ he cried, his voice breaking, as he pulled against my grip. He turned around, looking at me helplessly. I was crying freely, shaking my head.

‘No, Cap. You can’t save this one. I’m sor...’ I cut myself off, my voice breaking. Steve all but collapsed, and we both leaned on each other for support, our heads bowed in defeat. Steve fell to his knees, his heart broken, just as mine was. We stayed there, in the rain and the wind, our grief not permitting us to move, waiting for a rescue, as the rest of the ship sank around us, groaning out its own lamentation.
