Sam

Twenty minutes later, I had calmed down considerably. Mace had fixed me up, and I was standing in my bedroom, standing over the sink, water dripping from my face as I stared at a reflection I didn’t recognise. I had cleaned myself up, but I still didn’t look like me. I was pale, with only the slightest remnant of a tan from our weekend away. My eyes looked like those of a caged animal, wide and frightened. I sighed, reaching down into the cabinet below me, for my make-up bag.

I applied concealer, foundation, and a little eye make-up, until I felt that I looked human once more. I pulled my hair back, off my face, in a tight ponytail, before I walked from my room, pulling on a new top, and making myself walk towards the control room. Just as I reached there, I noticed the tension. Coms weren’t back up yet.

I sighed shakily, fear coursing through my veins, and began to walk to my seat. I stopped dead when suddenly, one of the analysts stood and shouted out, across the room.

‘Sir, we have an incoming bird. We can’t establish radio connection with them, but it seems that Stark is leading…’ I didn’t listen to anymore, before sprinting to the nearest stairwell. I didn’t care if it wasn’t them, I needed to see this for myself. I raced up, unable to feel any pain through the adrenaline rushing through me.

I burst out, to see Tony landing beside a quinjet, almost the entire deck crew surrounding them, checking the jet, which was splattered with a pattern of burns, graze-marks, and bullet holes. I saw a flash of blue and red, and ran straight for it, bursting through the crowd, launching myself at the red-and-white stripes. Steve stumbled back, surprised, before sighing, and hugging me back. I clung to him tight for a moment, before my anger caught up with me. I jumped back and slapped his chest.

‘I thought I told you not to do that! You guys were supposed to be in contact the whole time!’ I cried, before hugging him again, as he chuckled lightly.

‘I’m not the one who’s good with technology.’ He pointed out, and I straightened up, letting go of him, and kissing his cheek, before pointing at him.

‘If you even think of moving, I’ll make you regret it.’ I told him lowly, before pushing my way through, to Tony. I stormed up to him, and glared at him, and Freddie, who was on his shoulder.

‘You two…’ I began, before sighing and hugging Tony. He awkwardly hugged me back, until I pulled back and huffed.

‘If either of you ever let the coms go down again, I’ll stuff you both and send you to Harvard to be dissected. Alright?’ I asked, putting my hands on my hips. Freddie beeped an affirmative, and Tony nodded carefully, looking me over.

‘Are you alright?’ he asked me carefully. I huffed and nodded.

‘I’m fine, but you guys are never doing that again.’ I told him with finality, before turning around, only to find Steve standing right behind me. I sighed.

‘I though I told you to stay where you were.’ I grumbled half-heartedly, before hugging him tight again.

‘Remember all the times when you’ve told me to stop scaring you?’

‘Yeah, and you never listened?’ he asked, raising an eyebrow.

‘This wasn’t payback, was it?’ I asked him, leaning back to look at him. His eyes glazed over for half a second, before he smirked at me.

‘Now why would I do that?’ he asked, raising his eyebrow, his smirk growing. I sighed, and hugged him tight.

‘Because you’re cruel.’ I grumbled against his chest. He pulled me close, so we were flush against each other, and I winced as my newest injury brushed against his belt. I pulled back, looking him over, and running my hands down his arms as my eyes searched frantically for any bullet holes.
