Steve
I watched the screen of the ‘tablet’ I held in my hands, trying to memorise faces, identities, and blueprints. But I couldn’t concentrate. Not really.
My eyes flicked over to the screen on the wall, giving us a direct link to Sam in the lab. She had been there for hours, working away. She had said that she didn’t want to be distracted, but that wasn’t much of a comfort. I knew that she was struggling; having to deal with them again and again was breaking down the walls in her mind, letting the memories, which she had buried from Mexico, loose in her mind. All Loki would tell us was that it was to do with Mexico, and that she should and would tell us if she felt ready.
I sighed, putting down the tablet, and getting up, going to find Lexi. Maybe it was just me, but I felt like there was something huge that Sam was hiding from us. And I felt like it was carving a gaping hole between her and the rest of us. I didn’t like it, at all. But maybe it was just me, fuelling my stress over everything into worrying about a simple bit of nothing, with Sam.
I hoped that was all it was.
I saw Coulson passing in the corridor, and stopped him. His eyes sparkled as he smiled up at me.
‘Everything alright, Captain Rogers?’ he asked, clutching a file to his chest. I smiled back at him.
‘You wouldn’t happen to know where Lex… Agent Rose is, would you?’ I asked him, stepping to the side as another agent came through the hallway. Coulson nodded and pointed down the hall.
‘She was in the rec room a few minutes ago.’ He told me, smiling once more, before turning towards the control deck. I caught his arm before he could get too far, and he turned back around, a little confused.
‘Phil, will you watch Sam for me? I’m a little worried about her.’ I asked him. He nodded, his face serious, but his eyes soft, in that way that only he could manage.
‘Of course.’ He told me with a small smile, before going on his way. I nodded to myself and made my way down the hall to the rec room. It was a large room, with a pool table, a dart board on the wall, a small kitchen along one wall, a giant plasma screen, a few leather sofas, along with some tables and chairs, scattered about the place.
Lexi stood a way off from the wall, throwing darts at the board. Each of them hit close to the bulls eye. She walked forward, and pulled the darts from the board, before noticing me as she walked back to her spot. She smiled at me, flicking her hair out of her eyes.
‘Steve! How’re things?’ she asked chirpily, before beginning to throw her darts again. I nodded to myself. I thought I saw a magazine move on one of the tables, out of the corner of my eye, like someone brushed past it, but I put it to my imagination.
‘I’m good. You?’ I asked. She shrugged before throwing another dart.
‘Well, I don’t heal as fast as you or Sam, but I’m almost there.’ She said, before throwing her last dart, landing a perfect bulls’ eye, and turning to me.
‘What’s up?’ she asked, her eyes curious, with a hint of concern. I sighed, leaning against the backrest of the sofa beside me. I glanced up at the windows, which were clear, except for a small patch of condensation, like someone had just been standing right beside it.
‘I’m worried about Sam.’ I told her, she frowned and nodded, before nodding at one of the other sofas.
‘Want to talk about it over coffee?’ she offered, taking a step towards the small kitchen. ‘I just made a pot.’
