Freddie
Location… STARK TOWERS.
Surroundings… Undertermined.
Running at the walls, finding that they were not climbable, but that they moved. I backed up, as far as I could, and ran at the wall, and it skidded forward. I did this again, and again, until, as I ran, a bright light struck me, and the wall disappeared. I slid along the ground, to hear a familiar voice call my name.
‘Freddie? How’s you get stuck under there?’ Tony asked, as I turned, looking up at him, zooming in on his face. He held out his hand, offering a small smile.
‘Come here, boy.’ He called, and I happily obliged, thankful to be free from the walls. I scampered up his arm, before resting comfortably on his shoulder. There was something about Tony that made me feel safe. Sam would always be my favourite, but Tony was a close second.
And then there was Abby.
‘You alright Fredster? No-one spilled anything on you, did they?’ I beeped a negative, and Tony nodded, continuing on his journey towards the kitchen. He looked behind him, and sighed.
‘Dummy, come on, that’s not sweeping. That’s not going to do anything. Sweep. Help clean up. And You? My dad can lift cups faster than you. And he’s six feet under!’ he exclaimed, before sighing.
I scuttled a little closer to his neck, and beeped gently. He sighed, and looked down at me, before frowning.
‘You’ve got… something on you. Let’s get you cleaned up.’ He told me, heading towards the elevator. He stepped inside, and we went down, stepping out into one of the labs. He picked me up, and set me down on the work bench, pulling over a stool.
‘We can’t have SHIELD’s most valuable agent freezing up because of sticky hinges, can we?’ he asked me. I beeped with pride.
I definitely wasn’t SHIELD’s most valuable agent; Sam could move things with her mind. Loki and Lexi could control people with theirs. Thor could control lightning, and fly. Natasha was probably the best field agent in history. Clint was probably the best marksman ever to have lived. Steve was… Well, he was Captain America. Bruce was almost definitely the smartest person ever to walk through SHIELD’s halls. And Tony was probably the best weapons consultant in the history of the world.
But even given all that, it was still nice to hear. I beeped gently, moving close to Tony’s hand. He took out a small airbrush, and began trying to wash the leftover alcohol from my legs, before they became stiff.
The elevator dinged, and Sam walked through, looking around, a mug in her hand.
‘Tony, have you seen… Fredster? How are you buddy? Long time, no see!’ she said excitedly, walking over, and bending down next to me. Her skin was darker, like caramel, and her eyes sparkled.
‘How’s Abby been treating you?’ she asked. I beeped happily. Abby was just like Sam. She was happy, almost always excited, and got along with everyone. Sam smiled, reaching out and patting my head.
‘I’m glad to hear it, bud.’ She said with a smile, before sighing, putting her coffee cup down on the desk. Tony looked up at her, putting down the miniature air-blaster he had taken out.
‘You alright?’ he asked, looking at her with concern. I scuttled over to her, and she smiled softly, as I ran in between her arched fingers. She nodded, before sighing, running a hand through her hair.
‘Just… well… I’m not really sure if they were nightmares or not.’ She said, before sighing, pressing the heels of her palms into her eyes, before rubbing her eyes. I looked up at her curiously, unsure of what a nightmare was.
‘Want to talk about it?’ Tony offered. I sat down, listening curiously, as Sam sighed.
‘Only if you swear not to tell Steve about it… Them.’ She corrected quietly. Tony nodded, frowning.
‘I won’t. When did they start?’ he asked, and she sighed, putting her head in her hands.
‘Then night we left.’ She said quietly. Tony stiffened.
‘How does Steve not know?’ Tony asked carefully, causing Sam to let out a humourless laugh.
‘Tony, I spent years as an insomniac, while under constant surveillance. It’s safe to say that I’m an excellent fake-sleeper.’ she told him, before sighing.
‘I’m pretty sure Bucky’s in my dreams.’ She muttered, and Tony froze.
‘Bucky… as in…’ Sam nodded as he trailed off.
‘As in the Winter Soldier. As in Steve’s best friend. Yeah, that one.’ She said, a shiver running through her body. I moved closer to her, confused. She shook her head, and ran her hand through her hair again.
‘I don’t… They seemed so real.’ She whispered, before glancing up at Tony. Tony pulled over a chair for her, which she sat on.
‘What happened in them?’ he asked quietly. Sam put her hands in her head, before lifting her head, so her closed eyes were uncovered, as she breathed through her hands. She shook her head again, before she sighed again.
‘There’s this guy. At first he’s fighting Steve, but then they seem to work together.’ She shook her head. ‘It’s all kind of blurry, I can never see who else they’re fighting… But then the other guy goes down, and Steve jumps to help him. That’s why I think it’s Bucky…’ she trailed off again, and shook her head.
‘Something happens, and I can’t tell what, but next thing, they’re both overwhelmed, and I try to run to help, but I can’t. It’s like I’m held back or something.’ She shivered, and gulped.
‘And then the dream shifts, and I’m back in Mexico, only it’s not a memory, it’s new, and it’s worse than it ever was before.’ She sighed shakily, shaking her head.
Tony frowned at her, his eyes cautious. ‘How so?’ he asked.
She shook her head, putting her head in her hands, before sitting up, shaking herself out.
‘It doesn’t matter. It’s just a dream, right?’ she asked, looking up at Tony with pleading eyes. Tony seemed taken aback. He tried to say something a few times, before sighing, thinking better of it.
‘Is there a chance that Alex is messing with your head? Trying to put you off?’ he suggested. I watched Sam carefully. She didn’t believe that at all, but she sighed.
‘I hope so Tony. I really hope so.’ She said, before looking to me.
‘Go to sleep, bud. You’ve been running for a whole week straight.’ She told me, her voice triggering the command, and my legs folded up beneath me, as I slipped into standby.
