Sam

‘Sam?’ I heard Steve call, and jumped, quickly finished up my phone call.

‘Here, I’ll call you back either later or tomorrow and we’ll finish… yeah, exactly… Alright… Bye.’

I hung up just as Steve walked into the room. I looked up and smiled, glad to see him. It had been a week, and Bruce had let me off the medic floor, but I still wasn’t allowed back to work. I sighed to myself. I guess it was for the best.

Steve walked in, and raised an eyebrow at me, as I sat cross-legged on the bed, my phone in my hands.

‘Who was that?’ he asked, and I grinned, shrugging.

‘No-one.’ I dodged, before standing up, and walking over to him, wrapping my hands around his waist.

‘Please tell me that you’re here to tell that…’ I began, and he picked up, wrapping his arms around me, and leaning down towards me.

‘They need you on the bridge.’ He said quietly. I grinned, and rose up, onto my tip-toes, kissing him. He pulled me closer, until I was flush against his body. He pulled out of the kiss, resting his forehead against mine.

His breathing was heavy. He was definitely stressed. His entire body was tense, and I didn’t like it. I didn’t like seeing him worrying about anything. I reached my hands up to his shoulders, and ran my hands along them.

‘Steve, what’s wrong?’ I asked him softly, and he sighed, his shoulders slumping, but not relieving any of the tension locked in there. He didn’t answer, so I ducked under his arm, walking around him, and closing the door. I took his hand, and lead him to the side of the bed, sitting him down, before crawling around, kneeling at his back.

‘What are you…?’ he began, trying to get up and turn around, but I grabbed his shoulders, forcing him down. I put my hands on his shoulders, and began kneading them with my hands, noticing that they were hard knots of tension. I watched as a shiver ran down Steve’s spine, and grinned, leaning forward, and popping my head around his shoulder.

‘Just relax. They can wait a while.’ I told him, before pressing a soft kiss against the nape of his neck. I massaged his shoulders, until I felt them relax, at which point, I sighed, letting my hands slide over his shoulders, and down his chest, where he took my hands in his. I kissed his cheek, and he sighed.

‘That was magic. Thank you.’ He breather, before turning his head and capturing my lips. He pulled back, and rested his forehead against mine.

‘We really need to get to the bridge.’ He told me reluctantly, and I sighed, before nodding. He gave him one last swift kiss, before climbing off the bed, and pulling him with me.

I slipped on my shoes, and Steve took my hand, leading me out the door. We went up in the elevator, and stepped out, walking into the control rooms, our entwined hands falling apart naturally. Steve walked over to Tony and Bruce, while I walked straight up to Nick, who was talking with Coulson.

‘I’d like to be polite and ask your permission for something.’ I told him, the words feeling foreign on my tongue. Phil looked at me curiously, with a small smile, while Nick raised an eyebrow, not saying anything as he waited for me to elaborate. I sighed, glancing behind me, to check that Steve was still over with the others. I looked back to Nick, and straightened up.

‘As I’m sure you know, it’s Steve’s birthday next week, and I’d like to get him off the helicarrier this weekend, for some R&R.’ Nick raised an eyebrow, looking me over. I rolled my eyes at him.

‘Nick, I want to give him a break, bring him to a beach. Show him places he hasn’t even dreamed of. Go wash your mind out with soap.’ I told him. He straightened up, glancing over at Steve, over the top of my head, before taking a deep breath, his face set in stone. I felt my shoulders slump, knowing what he was about to say before he even said it.
