Sam

I woke with a start, sitting bolt upright in the bed. I looked around, confused and dazed. Where was I? What was happening? Slowly I came back to myself, realising where I was. I was on the SHIELD helicarrier, in a recovery room. I was alright, no longer able to feel the pain of my past injuries, but I felt different. I felt brittle, frail. I felt strong in body, but overall, I felt weak. I hated it. I sat up, swinging my legs over the side of the bed. I slowly stood, and began to sneak out the door.

Slowly, I made my way through the helicarrier without getting caught; ducking into alcoves when I thought I might be seen, dodging the cameras which were positioned around the ship. I didn’t like this feeling of weakness, and if I wanted to have any sort of a chance of keeping going, I needed to banish it. I reached my bedroom and sneaked inside quickly changing and grabbing my straps. I slipped back outside, and sprinted silently to the training room. As I walked inside, I strapped up my wrists.

I walked right up to one of the punching bags, and began pounding it furiously, hoping to destroy that feeling of being weak by proving to my mind that I was strong. For five minutes, I pounded the bag, each punch stronger than its predecessor. I let out all of my frustrations, and ignored the shivers running down my spine as my memories washed over me.

Anger swelled in my gut, and I furiously threw my fist into the punching bag.

There was a loud ripping sound and the bag crashed to the floor, surprising me. I took a step back, feeling suddenly vulnerable as the sand spilled out across the floor.

I looked up at the dangling chains, still on the hook. I breathed heavily, my mind blank. I looked up at the hook, to see the chains and some ripped leather dangling there. I took another step back, gasping. I hadn’t done that for a while. Even though that was proof of being strong, I still felt like I was walking on thin ice. Well, jumping up and down with an elephant on my shoulders, while standing on very thin ice. I felt like I was going to break. But I couldn’t… I wouldn’t… Would I? I turned and fled the room, a myriad of emotions swirling in my mind. I stormed through the ship, slowly untying my wrists.

I reached the boardroom, and was still untying my left hand. I quickly pulled off the rest of the strap off, walking straight to the computer as I shoved them into my pocket.

‘Anything?’ I asked, and was greeted with groan. I sighed, stepping up to the computer. ‘Well then, we’ll just have to think of something else, won’t we?’ I said, more to myself, but everyone heard.

I typed in a few different codes, setting up extra defences. As I did, I slowly felt myself begin to sink back into a sense of calm.
