Sam

I sat on the windowsill for a moment, gathering myself. Nat was so strong, even through the hell she had been forced through. I just wished that I could be that strong, even just for a moment. I just wanted to feel unbreakable again, even in the most fleeting of miracles. But she didn’t know, none of them did. What they saw was only the tip of the iceberg. Alex was trying to break me, and he was succeeding. I could feel my defences slowly, painstakingly, shattering.

I closed my eyes for a moment, letting my mind go blank for a second. For a second, it was just me, no-one else. For a second, I could just forget about everything, or deal with it all, if I wanted. But at times, it felt like it was all too much, like I couldn’t do it. I was strong, I could withstand a lot. But this was too much, I was becoming that prisoner, who was finally ready to give up. The one who was one beating away from spilling all the secrets they knew. It terrified me. But I forced the thoughts from my mind, not wanting to think about any of it, just for one moment.

‘Sam?’ I heard a voice call. I resisted the urge to sigh, having enjoyed the few seconds to myself. I opened my eyes, to find myself in one of the weapons lockers on the ship, a 9mm in my hands.

‘Sam, what are you doing down here?’ Phil asked. I looked up, noticing that he was there, and fully taking in my surroundings. Why was I here? I was just up on the control floor! What was I doing with a gun? I put the gun down quickly, and took a step back from it.

‘I… I…’ I stuttered, choking on my words, as tears of fear sprang into my eyes. Coulson stepped forward, taking my shaking hands in his. He looked at me, concern masking his face.

‘Sam, what were you doing with the gun?’ he asked quietly, as I looked frantically around the room. How did I even get here?

My breath picked up as I looked back to him. ‘I don’t… I wouldn’t…’ I stuttered, and Coulson’s face fell further. ‘How did I even get here?’ I asked in a terrified whisper, as I began shivering. Coulson frowned, putting a hand against my forehead, his frown deepening.

‘You’re burning up.’ He muttered, before looking me over. ‘Sam, what were you doing down here?’ he asked quietly, wrapping an arm around my quaking shoulders, and began leading me from the room.

‘I don’t… I didn’t… I don’t even remember making my way there.’ I whispered as we walked, scared out of my wits. Was this the first stage of the Red Room Protocol? Were Lexi and Nat being targeted too? As Phil led me to the medic wing, I grabbed his sleeve tight.

‘You have to warn Lexi and Nat.’ I whispered forcefully. He watched me carefully, not breaking eye-contact, as Bruce stepped out of a room behind him. I could see the confusion slowly leave Coulson’s face, as the significance of the Red Room Protocol began to dawn on him. Bruce looked up, seeing us, and walked over to us.

Sweat dripped down the back of my neck, and the room spun around me, my knees giving way.

‘Sam!’ Bruce exclaimed, running forward to catch me in my semi-conscious state. I slowly lost consciousness, lying in Bruce’s arms, unable to move, or even think.

Nat

‘Nat…’ Someone called cautiously. I blinked hard, but it was like I was still asleep. I couldn’t see anything. I didn’t know if I was standing, or sitting, or lying down.

‘Nat, put the knife down.’ The voice, who I now recognised as Clint, said cautiously, his voice strong. I blinked again, and suddenly, I was awake. I was standing in the kitchen beside the control room, a large knife held fast against my wrist.

My heart picked up speed as I realised what was happening, a sickening sense of déjà vu settling over me. I forced my hand to let go of the knife, and it clattered to the floor. As it did, I felt like a puppet, whose strings were just cut, and crumpled to the ground. Clint lunged forward, catching my shivering body. He kicked the knife away, and slowly lowered us to the ground.

I shivered uncontrollably, cuddling up close to him, as fear and disbelief washed over me.

‘How… when… How did I get here Clint?’ I asked him, my voice like that of a scared young girl. He held me tight, shushing me.

‘You left the room, and I followed you. I found you here, about to slit your wrists. What’s going on with you, Nat? You’re stronger than this, Nat.’ he told me, his voice thick with disbelief as he put his hand against my cheek, before frowning. Breathing became harder, and he placed his hand against my forehead.

‘You’re burning up.’ He whispered, frowning in confusion, before turning and calling out, his voice sounding muffled.

Black spots danced across my eyes, as I fought to get my breath back, and stay conscious. But it was futile, and I collapsed, unconscious, in Clint’s arms.

Lexi

‘Lexi!’ I heard Johnny call frantically, before I was pulled backwards, falling against him. I blinked hard, and Johnny’s worried and scared face appeared before me, against a backdrop of clouds. Wait, clouds?

I sat up quickly, my heart beating fast as fear shrouded my heart. I looked around, to find myself out on the flight deck of the helicarrier. Johnny and I were on the ground, near the edge. My heart beat painfully fast in my chest, as my eyes flicked about in fear.

‘How… How…’ I began, hyperventilating. I met Johnny’s eyes as fear-fuelled tears filled my own.

‘Johnny, how did I get out here? I… I was just in the… in the control room… I… I…’ I began, panicking. Johnny frowned as I scrambled to my feet, stumbling a little. He jumped up, catching me, and steadying me.

‘Lex, you left, looking for Sam. I followed you, and found you out here, about to jump.’ He told me with sorrowful eyes. ‘I don’t understand why you would even think about jumping like that.’

I stepped further away from the edge, shaking my head as a buzzing feeling began to fill my mind. This wasn’t right. I didn’t remember even thinking about checking out here. I had seen Sam walking into the stairwell, and then… nothing. Next thing I knew, I was here. It wasn’t possible.

‘I… I was just inside…’ I reasoned, my voice small and barely audible over the whipping winds around us. I started to hyperventilate, each breath feeling like it wasn’t reaching my lungs.

My legs gave way, and I fell into Johnny’s arms, gasping for air, and quaking with some sudden fever. Johnny looked me over, his eyes like those of a frightened rabbit. He put a cool hand against my forehead, and frowned.

‘You’re burning up…’ he said, before noticing as I began to pass out. He grabbed my chin, forcing me to look at him. ‘Lexi, keep your eyes on me. Ok? Eyes on me.’ He commanded.

I nodded weakly, a black fog seeping its way into my vision.

‘Eyes on me, Lex. Just hold on…’ Johnny told me, his voice fading as the blackness filled my vision, leaving me falling endlessly.
