Chapter 08

Caleb

He.

It's been three whole days since that dreadful mishap. I haven't replied to Emma's three question marks yet. But the problem is that the longer I wait, the more awkward it will be to address it. I don't even know what I should say to her. Is being honest really the best choice in situations like these?

Maybe I should just forget about everything, finding Bailey and all. She was my middle school crush, and that was it. We weren't even close enough to be considered acquaintances. That's entirely my fault. And as punishment I should just suppress all of the reminiscing I've done recently and give up pursuing my search for a girl who most likely thinks nothing of me.

Just as I'm about to turn the bedside lamp off to end the day, my phone vibrates from a new Instagram message. It's from Emma. A million different thoughts enter my head, a good ninety-nine percent of them ending in Emma either angry at my lack of response or teasing me after figuring out my mistake. Although, practically speaking, I know Emma wouldn't ever be so mean. I'm simply overreacting.

I come to my senses, take a deep breath, and open up the message. The million thoughts in my head crumble to zero the moment I see the picture she has sent me. I think I've forgotten how to breathe.

It's her. And man, has she become even cuter these past few years.

I can't jump to any immediate conclusions as much as my excited heart wants to. I still have no idea in what context this photo ended up in my inbox.

The tiny devil's advocate in me is pointing at the possibility that none of this might even be real. Perhaps I had unknowingly fallen asleep earlier, and this is one hell of a vivid dream. But like a pinch to my arm, Emma lays the truth through her next few words.

It only takes six words to steal away every bit of self-doubt I had only a few moments ago. I have actually forgotten how to breathe.

Hey, Caleb. You remember Bailey, right?
