...8 months after Sophie's birth.
"Tom, can you get Sophie please?" I screamed from the kitchen.
Sophie screams echoed over the house while I continued to load the dishwasher. As I washed my sticky hands, Bill came into the kitchen holding Sophie in his arms. Her chubby fingers curled onto his bare chest and her hardly wet eyes laid fixed on his face.
"He's in the shower," Bill said handing Sophie over to me. "She wasn't really crying. Just whining."
I thanked him and Bill left the kitchen to finish getting dressed. Sophie latched onto my black satin slip and began sucking on her tongue. I walked down the hall to my bedroom, carefully climbing over the baby gates as I made my way inside. It was not just Tom and I's bedroom Sophie had taken over, it was our entire house.
Bill, who also had a sitting area in his room, deemed it as Sophie's playroom. The room covered in foam alphabets and overflowed with some of Sophie's toys. It had a baby pink colored playpen, one of the many gifts from the baby shower. The walls were decorated with framed pictures of Bill and Sophie and small doodles they both had done. A huge fluffy pink blanket sat in the far right corner of the room covered in dozens of pillows and stuffed animals. It was the exact opposite of her nursery.
The first two weeks home my mom and Tom's mom stayed with us to look after Sophie. At first, part of me was relieved that Tom and I could get some rest but after the first week, we started to feel like children ourselves. My mom and Tom's mom completely took over and at times forced us to take a break even when we did not want to. Bill joked that it was no longer our baby. After my mom flew back to Ohio, Simone stayed an extra week. She was in awe of Sophie as we all were.
To our relief Sophie has been a great baby. Do not get me wrong, she has her moments, but they are rare. She hardly cries and even though I was too stubborn to admit, our parents helped us greatly with getting her started on a schedule. She is always smiling and very alert.
Day after day, my mom joked about her color. Then months started passing and she continued to stay just as bright. It do not bother me because I loved my child however she would look and I had enough common sense to figure my biracial child to be of a lighter complexion since I am caramel.
However, Tom was curious. Of course, he knew it was not an 'infidelity' issue; he was simply amazed at what we created.
Sophie unlike Tom and I had huge round grey eyes. They were so light they were almost clear. When you looked at her and she looked at you, you could not tell where her iris began on stopped. At times, it looked as if her pupil was floating surrounded by a cloud of ice. If you stared too long you didn't know if she was looking at you or through you. Could she see all you have done? Could she see straight through me.
