Chapter Five
Kiptyn Cross was the bane of my existence. His presence alone could turn my mood completely around. He could literally make me angry in around .5 seconds, and I knew that for a fact.
Our ongoing hatred for each other began whenever we were in the second grade. I had this huge crush on him because he sat next to me in class and he had these super big blue eyes that I just loved to look at. I asked him to be my boyfriend and of course, being the eight year old boy that he was, poured sand on me. He also told everyone that I had cooties.
Ever since then, I'd despised him. He pulled my chair out from under me four times in the third grade, he "accidentally" spilled his sloppy joe on me in the fourth grade, he filled my locker with fake spiders in the fifth grade, and so forth. He'd literally always done something horrific to me, until around ninth grade, whenever he seemed to think that words would hurt me more than actions.
Whenever I made the cheerleading squad freshman year, he told all of the cheerleaders that I had a skin disease. Whenever I ran for student body president, he wrote "bitch" on all of my signs. But the worst was whenever I began dating Drew and he spread a rumor that I was only dating him for money.
Austin beat the shit out of him for that one.
Not only did I hate Kiptyn for all of those reasons, I also hated him because he was an asshole to every single other girl. He had probably had around thirty different girlfriends are entire high school career, and although that may not sound like a lot compared to some boys, those were just girlfriends. There's no telling how many girls he's actually been with.
But, with all of those girlfriends, he's treated them all like absolute shit. Sure, he might have wooed them in the beginning, but the relationships never lasted more than a month and the girl's always came out heartbroken.
He was an asshole and a heartbreaker.
I guess I was glad I got out of that one back in the second grade.
"Dallis," Sadie said, pulling me out of my thoughts as she walked into the hotel bathroom, "You almost done in there? We need to leave in about an hour."
I leaned my head back under the water one last time, letting it rush down my hair and over my body. "Yeah, I'll be out in a sec."
Whenever we finally arrived in Carson City, Lyle and Kiptyn decided on some extremely cheap Motel in an extremely sketchy area. But, I was thankful that the price wasn't much, because I was limited on expenses to begin with. And it also helped that me, Sadie, and Lincoln were sharing a room, so the room expense was divided three ways.
I finally shut off the water and grabbed my towel from the rack, wrapping it around my body before squeezing the excess water out of my hair. I stepped out of the shower and padded into the hotel room where Lincoln was curling her hair.
"Where did Sadie go?" I asked, placing my suitcase on top of one of the beds and unzipping it.
"Jase needed her help with something," Lincoln said, a smirk on her lips, "Or at least that was her excuse."
I rolled my eyes, slipping on a pair of lacy underwear. "I don't know why she didn't just room with him."
Lincoln snorted. "No kidding."
I dropped my towel and snapped on my bra, wrapping the same towel around my hair. I searched through my suitcase until I found something acceptable to wear.
I was about to pull the dress on over my head, but I stopped midway whenever I heard my phone ringing. I groaned, causing Lincoln to glance over at me with a confusing look.
I put down the dress and walked over to the nightstand, grabbing my phone. Of course it was Drew calling, since my parents had given up on trying to get in touch with me earlier today.
I decided to finally bite the bullet.
"Hello?" I asked, letting out a breath.
"Thank God," Drew said, "Do you know how worried I've been?"
"I'm sorry," I breathed, sitting down on the bed. "I wasn't trying to worry anyone."
"Where are you? I'll come and get you, wherever you are," He almost sounded like he was crying, which made my heart ache a little, "I just want you to be safe. With me."
I swallowed the lump in my throat. "I am safe, Drew."
He let out a ragged sigh. "Dallis, baby, please just let me come get you."
"I'm with Sadie and Crossing Lincoln," I took a deep breath, "I'm fine. I'll be back in two weeks."
"You're with Crossing Lincoln? On their tour?" He paused. "Dallis, what are you doing?"
I started to pick at my nails, his voice making me second guess all of my decisions. I knew this would happen. That was the whole reason I hadn't answered his calls in the first place. Just his voice could change everything.
Before I could say anything else, Drew started again. "Why are you doing this?"
I was silent for a minute. "Ask my parents."
"Is this about Austin?"
"This has nothing to do with him."
"Just come home, Dallis, please."
I felt tears pressing against the backs of my eyes. "I need to go, Drew. I'll call you."
I hung up while he tried to get in a few last words. I sat my phone down on the nightstand with shaky hands, my heart racing. I didn't realize just how much he would affect me.
"You okay?"
I glanced up at Lincoln, nodding my head slightly. "I'm fine."
She sat down her curling wand. "I'm not trying to pry or anything, but why did you decide to come on this trip?"
I pulled the towel from my hair and began to run my fingers through it. "I just got into a fight with my parents. It was a spur of the moment decision."
Lincoln stared at me for a second and I could tell that she knew I wasn't telling her everything, but she just nodded her head and started curling her hair again.
I stood up and walked back over to my clothes, grabbing the dress and pulling it over my head. I turned to look in the mirror, smoothing out the slight wrinkles. The dress was cute, but not too dressy. It was a light coral color, mid thigh, and racerback. I grabbed my favorite necklace out of my suitcase, a simple gold chain with a small gold giraffe. It was my eighteenth birthday present from Austin, even though I hadn't found it until a few weeks after he left. It had been hidden in my desk, my name written on top. He was the only one that knew how much I adored giraffes, so the necklace was really special to me.
I hadn't even noticed Lincoln walking up behind me, her eyes drifting to the pendant resting on my chest. The corners of her mouth turned up in a smile.
"I was with him," She started, "When he bought that for you."
I stared at her in the mirror, my eyebrows furrowing. "You were with him?"
She nodded her head, the smile fading from her lips. "We were pretty good friends, I was almost always with him."
I turned around, staring at her. "How did I not know about this?"
She shrugged. "Not many people did. It wasn't like a secret or anything. We were just friends."
I swallowed the lump that was forming in my throat. "Do you know why he left?"
Lincoln sighed, sitting down on the edge of the bed. "I'm sure it's the same reason you left."
My eyes widened slightly. "So he told you."
"Yes. But he made me promise not to tell you," She crossed her legs, "He wanted you to find out on your own."
My heart was about to beat out of my chest. "Do you know where he went?"
She shook her head, a frown forming on her lips. "I wish I did, Dallis."
I turned around and looked at myself in the mirror again, my grey eyes now red from the tears that were welling up. I furiously wiped at them, hating myself for being so emotional all of the time.
I grabbed my hair dryer and walked into the bathroom, tears leaking down my cheeks as I began to dry my hair. I didn't even know why I was crying, I just knew that my heart was hurting and I felt like I couldn't make it stop.
Whenever my hair was dry, I threw together a quick half crown braid. I grabbed my make up from the counter and applied a little bit of coverup for my dark circles and mascara. I walked back into the bedroom and noticed that Lincoln had changed out of her yoga pants and tshirt. She was now wearing a pair of high wasted cut offs and a lacy black tank top, her curly hair pulled back into a messy bun with a few strands hanging out.
"You look cute," I said, a small smile on my lips.
"So do you," She said as she pulled on a pair of strappy sandals.
I was about to ask her another question about Austin, but I was stopped whenever Sadie barged in. I turned around and nearly busted out laughing at her appearance. She was only wearing a pair of jean shorts and a bra, her ponytail messy and sticking up everywhere.
"Your appearance screams 'I just had sex,'" I laughed.
She shot me the bird and walked over to her suitcase, grabbing a shirt out of the heaping pile of clothes. She pulled the simple black high-low top on over her head, her bellybutton completely exposed.
"So why were you topless?" Lincoln asked, still laughing.
Sadie pulled her hair out of the ponytail and ran her fingers through it, holding a bobypin between her teeth. I walked over to her and took the bobypin, beginning to braid her hair.
"As Dallis clearly pointed out, me and Jase had a few minutes to get a quick one in," She said, grabbing a tube of red lipstick, "Kiptyn came back sooner than Jase thought, so I kind of just ran."
I giggled, finishing the french braid on the side of her head in record time. I pushed the bobby pin into her hair and sighed, grabbing the lipstick out of her hand. She parted her lips as I applied it for her.
"Do you normally dress her?" Lincoln asked.
I nodded my head. "Hair and make up are two things that Sadie has never really been good at."
Sadie gave me a look. "Bitch."
I was about to say something else, but a loud banging on our door caused me to jump.
"Come in!" Lincoln yelled.
Kiptyn opened the door, revealing his extremely attractive body. He was wearing a simple black v-neck and a pair of jeans with a rip in the knee. "Are you guys ready?" He asked, his voice laced with irritation. He darted his eyes over to me, giving me a once over. "That's what you're wearing?"
I gave him a look. "Is there something wrong with my outfit?"
"You look like it's your first day of kindergarten."
"We'll be down in ten," Lincoln said, narrowing her eyes at him.
He rolled his own eyes and walked out of the room, slamming the door behind him. I turned to look at myself in the mirror. "Does it really look like I'm a kid?"
"You're definitely not sending out a very bad girl message," Sadie said.
"But I'm not a bad girl," I pointed out.
Lincoln sighed. "You're also not a nun."
I pointed to my boobs. "This dress shows cleavage!" I then pointed to my thigh. "And leg!"
Sadie ignored me and searched through her own suitcase before throwing something at me. I held it up, my eyes widening. "I'm not trying to get laid, Sadie."
Sadie rolled her eyes. "Just put it on."
I huffed, slipping off my dress and pulling on the one Sadie had given me. It was black, of course, and strapless. It was a babydoll style, tight around my boobs and looser around my stomach and legs. It was simple, but showed more cleavage and leg than the other dress.
Sadie handed me a tube of lipstick in her favorite Kardashian Coral color, which I skeptically applied to my lips. Lincoln undid the pins in my hair and let it fall, framing my face. I tucked a piece behind my ear as I slipped on my sandals. I turned towards the mirror and my eyes widened.
"I don't even look like me."
"You look hot," Lincoln said from behind me.
"Okay," Sadie grinned, "Let's get out of here."
