Chapter One

Jace was standing with his back against the wall, next to the training room where Clary was having her shadowhuntertraining. He hated how much Clary wanted to be a shadowhunter; of course he had accepted it without mourning. It wouldn’t be fair to Clary, but it hurt Jace more than anything as he thought of the risks of a shadowhunter life. When she really became a full time shadowhunter, he knew the dangers. He always accepted dead as a part of his life, but Jace couldn’t imagine what to do if something happened to Clary. He heard heels coming towards him, Izzy of course. “Why aren’t you inside, with Clary?”, she asked. Jace gave her an agry look, but Isabelle laughed about it. She knew these looks of him. “Just kidding, I know you aren’t allowed to stay inside anymore, gazing at Clary’s ass”. Isabelle dodged Jace’s arm, and stood next to him. Since two weeks Jace wasn't in charge of Clary's training anymore. Maryse did everything now. And Jace was quite sure that Jocelyn has had a say in that. “What’s up Iz?” “You know better than anyone why I came up here Jace Lightwood. Have you told her yet?” Jace avoided Isabelle’s look. “JACE HOW COULD YOU?” “I can’t tell her, okay.” Isabelle looked truly angry now. “You have to tell Clary, or else I will tell her.”

“Tell me what?” Clary looked surprised. Neither Jace nor Izzy had noticed Clary before. “How long have you been standing here?”Jace asked with a startled look on his face. “I suppose Jace is gonna tell you in a minute.” Izzy turned around and walked towards the elevator, but just before she stepped inside Izzy looked over her shoulder and said: “Clary, don’t forget to pass by my room before you leave. And Jace, you should tell her. I won’t forgive you if you hurt Clary like this. She has the right to-” But Jace and Clary never heard what rights Clary has because the elevator doors closed behind her. Clary looked at Jace and when their gazes met, she saw the pain in his eyes. “Jace, what’s wrong?” Jace tried to smile when he said: “it’s nothing, really don’t worry about it.” But Clary could see in his eyes that that wasn’t true. “Jace, I know this is going on for a week now. Stop the denying. If you don’t love me anymore the way you did, if you have someone else. Just tell me if you want to break up. I would like to hear the truth instead of being comforted by lies.” Jace face looked broken; she imagined that this was how he looked when Valentine killed his falcon. Clary felt a wave of guilt; she didn’t mean to say all this. But last week had been frustrating, she knew something was wrong the past week and Clary made all sort of scenarios in her head. “Clary, it’s not-” but then Jace broke off. He seemed to think better of it and said: “I don’t want to hurt you Clary but maybe that is the best thing. It won’t work out between us.” Clary froze and stared at Jace. But there was no doubt on his face, he meant it. “Okay.” Was all Clary could say, she didn’t want to cry in front of Jace now. So Clary just turned around and almost run to the elevator. While the doors of the elevator closed behind Clary, Jace sank on his knees. And the boy never cried again, he had once told Clary. But that wasn’t true anymore because now Jace cried, his head rested in his hands and the tears were streaming down his face.
