"One of the hardest things to do in life is letting go of what you thought was real."

"Do I have to go?" I whined like a child.
"Yes, Skylar. This is the last time I am telling you. You are going to the party," Carol ordered, like a mother to their child.
I groaned and stomped upstairs. I don't understand why we have to go to a stupid party. There isn't time for this. All day these people act normal, like nothing is happening outside of the walls.
"Are you ready yet?" Carol yelled from downstairs.
"Almost!" I lied, scrambling to get ready.
"Wear a skirt! This is formal, and we need to keep our appearances up!"
I rolled my eyes at the word 'skirt.' I've always hated them. I decided on wearing a knit sweater with patches on the elbows, a black mini skirt, black tights, brown boots, silver studs, and of course, my necklace that Carl gave me.
I looked in the mirror, happy with my outfit, and put my hair up in a messy ponytail. I left makeup out of the equation since I was never really that great at it.
"I'm ready," I announced while clumsily running down the stairs, almost falling.
"Let's go, then."
I followed Rick and Carl into the crowded mansion. People were laughing, drinking, and talking. They were clueless as to what was going on beyond the walls. As I walked in, Carl looked at me and studied my face.
"You okay?" He asked me quietly, looking into my eyes.
"It's just-- weird. That's all," I told him, cracking a smile. He nodded.
