After the whole Monica ordeal everyone went without dinner and went straight to bed. Apparently Monica lived with them now, she used to be Elena's grandma's fairy assistant. Elena couldn't sleep that night, she was staying in her mother's old room. Without giving it a second thought Elena left her bed and left the cottage to get some fresh air. She stepped out onto the wooden porch and let out a content sigh. "Elena?" she quickly turned around, "Could you not sleep?" it was Cole. "I...couldn't stop thinking." she responded. "About what?" "Like what happened to you before you hatched, if I'm really a mage, if I never get home, and what my mother was like...that's what I was thinking about." "Oh. I don't think you're ready for the answers...I have a question Elena, can you answer it?" "Uh, yeah, sure."she replied. "Are we friends?" that caught her off guard. "Are you still trying to do that? No, you aren't...while we're here you can find better people with better personalities that would make better friends than me," Cole looked her straight in the eye. "Don't ever repeat that. You're my master and you are the best person I've met in a long time." "You haven't met anyone else! I'm probably unintentionally brainwashing you or something!"she exclaimed. "I'm ready to answer you're question, master...if it makes you happy...and you'll let me be your friend." "R-really?" now Elena was curious, she was finally going to get some answers! "Why were you so scared on the bus, Cole? You were shaking..."Elena asked. He gulped, "Dragons are able to sense what's going on around them when they're in their egg. They just can't see and rely on hearing, touch, and smell. I...remember being in Areagore and I remember my parents...I met people...and...and" he stopped and looked away from Elena. "This is making you happy, right?" he asked. "No but I think you need to get this off of your chest and talk to somebody. You said something about dragons living a long time, can you explain?" "I...met people...they...the war took them...my...family." he was so nervous, it pained Elena to see him like this but he was so willing to put himself through this for her sake! He truly wanted her happy and Elena didn't understand why. "I'm sorry, I think I understand. Thank you...you can stop." Cole hugged her, "Are you my friend?" Elena hesitantly hugged back, "Are you my friend?" she asked back. "Of course," he responded. "Then I'm your friend, too."
The next morning Monica made Magic Pancakes and everyone sat at the dining room table. "Hey, Lena! I got my job back!" her dad walked in the front door. "Yay! You're a chiropractor again!" Elena exclaimed. "No, my old job. The one I had before you were even born!" he ruffled Elena's hair. "What job did you have?" Cole asked. Monica smirked, "Royal Guard."
"Dad! How on Earth?! You work with kings and queens?" Elena asked. "Yeah dude!"he laughed, "First day on the job for seventeen years!" "Wow..." Cole was blown away, "I remember my parents mentioning the royal family." "Oh yeah! My dad mentioned there being royal dragons too, who knows maybe you're royal Cole!" Elena laughed. Cole, Monica, and her dad just stared at her..."Umm, or not?" "Elena don't joke about that! That would mean-" Monica's mouth was covered by Cole's hand, "Very funny Elena! Such a good joke, see I'm smiling and laughing like human people do!" "Yeah, it was just a joke...and Cole turn back into a dragon already! I don't need you to pass out again!" "Whatever you say, Elena!"he quickly disappeared into a blue puff of smoke and walked out as his dragon form. "Anyways, I've gotta go to work kiddo..." Elena's dad awkwardly shuffled out of the cottage. Monica glared at Elena, "Don't try to get smart okay? Dragons aren't even supposed to-" Cole quickly stopped her by flying up to her and latching onto her face. Elena finished her pancakes and hurried upstairs-what was going on?
