"Tell her what happened," Dan states nonchalantly.

"Its not that simple Dan.  She kicked me out of the house a year early, and that was the last time I talked to her."

"Just say, 'Hey, its Chloe and I just thought you might want to know I'm in the hospital' and continue from there."

"All right."  I scroll through my contacts until I find her unchanged name:  Ashleyy.  I press "call" and put the phone to my ear.  One long ring, silence.  Another ring, silence.  The third ring is interrupted.

  "Hello?"

  "Hey."

  "Chloe?"

  "Yea, its me."

  "Oh, hi."

  "I'm in the hospital."

  "What?!  Why?!"

  "Like you care."

"Chloe, you know I care.  What happened?"

  "We were looking for furniture-"

"Furniture?  Why were you.....Oh, right.  Continue."

"And we were hit by a drunk driver.  The doctors thought I wasn't going to walk again, but today I was on crutches.  It'll take a while, but they all say I'm making good progress."

  "That's good."

  "I'm getting released tomorrow."

"So, you have a house?" she asks, ignoring me.

  "Yea, no thanks to you."

"Chloe, don't do this.  Don't give me the guilt trip."

"Why not?  I'm only seventeen. Ashley!  It's a really good thing I met Dan!"

"Yea, he's doing such a good job taking care of you."

"And you did so much better!"

"I can't do this.  Bye Chloe, I'm glad you're OK."

"Sure you are."  The other line goes dead.

I don't realize I'm crying until Dan comes over and wipes my tears.  He holds me close, us sitting on the bed our legs off to the side.

Phil comes in and I hold out my arm for him to join the hug.  He does.

All of a sudden, I get this feeling of utter happiness, completion, and relief.
