"I know. Well, I'll only be truthful if you promise me something."
  "And that is?"
  "Don't be mad at Ashley."
"Why would I be mad at Ashley? Whatever, I promise." I take a deep breath.
"When you went upstairs, Ashley told me I needed to leave."
  "But you're only seventeen!"
"I know, but don't be mad. I stayed at a motel for a couple of nights, then Dan took me in. Oh, and umm,...he's sort of my boyfriend. Anyway, we bought a house for me, and when  we were going to get furniture, we were hit by a drunk driver on my side. Dan had a sprained knee but he's recovered now. As for me, it broke both of my legs in different places, and I still have to go to physical therapy. But hey, at least I'm walking! The doctors said I probably wasn't going to be able to walk again." His mouth is wide open/
"Wow," he says after a while.
"Jack, have you cut since I've been gone?"
"Only once. The night after you left. I thought I'd lost you like mum and dad." My eyes water and my vision blurs. I blink until I can see clearly again.
"Let me see. He lifts up his sleeves to reveal many scabbing cuts. I count thirteen. I pull his sleeve back down, and turn my face.
"Ash helps me though, his support and distractions. I really do think he'a good for me!"
"I guess promises don't mean anything anymore," I mumble.
  "Yes they do!"
"No they don't. I shouldn't have done this, I'm sorry." I get up slowly, more tears falling from my eyes. He grabs my arms and tried to gently pull me back to the sitting position.
"No! Please! Chloe, don't leave me again! I miss you!"
"Jack, don't create a scene." I push him off of me and he crumples to the floor sobbing. I don't look at him, but instead to the boy in the black tee running through the doors. Ash...
I feel bad for leaving Jack in that situation, but not bad enough. A promise is a promise.
