Wriggling in the front seat as the water continued to scold me, I yanked my pants down hastily, leaving them at knee level, where the hot fabric couldn't touch my skin. Hitting my head back on the headrest repeatedly, I attempted to cope with the searing pain- hoping it would stop sometime soon.
My legs tingled, shooting electrical currents around my body while I became uncomfortable. The opposite of what I expected, happened- as my leg was an exceeding temperature, I felt as though I was placed in a freezer, my fingertips and toes becoming clumps of ice. Why was it so cold?
Shivering with my teeth chattering, I whimpered like a young girl, my eyesight becoming hazy as my temperature continued to drop. My mind kept trying to catch the greyhound of reality, while it hopped lazily like a rabbit behind. Simple things like where I was began to confuse me, while my surroundings blurred, like watercolors trespassing together.
I shut my eyes- just to concentrate while decluttering my mind.
Ears full of liquidized shock, I hardly heard Jacob's yell of agitation, "Fuck!" I didn't know if I could respond with my body numbing from the freezing water, but Jacob continued to wake me. "Stay awake!"
Why?! Why should I?!
The only warmth was in my leg, like piss dripping down someone's leg in the cold depths of an ocean; yet this warmth burned like acid, grating my skin cruelly. Would there be anything left when this was over?
It was only when I jolted forward from the harsh stop of the car that I stirred from my hibernation, my body trying to respond to the threat. Wake up! I couldn't. The slams and opens of doors followed before my seatbelt was ripped from me, allowing me to be carried by Jacob. I moaned my agony as my skin was subjected to movement, pins and knives jarring into that delicate skin. I didn't know what the rush was, so what if I had to be placed back into hospital?
The colors of the forest and the unrecognizable image of the cottage alerted me I was somewhere familiar, while I was thrown under the spiteful tears of the outside faucet. Screaming, Jacob held me still, checking that the water was landing forcefully on my thighs. I didn't have the energy to move away and fight my case.
"Shut up, I'm not returning to the hospital!" he growled close to my ear. I struggled to contain my screams by focusing on my breathing; in through the nose, out through the mouth, and repeat. It didn't help but it gave me a pathetic distraction.
As predicted, ten minutes of being under the running water had resulted in my legs being numb and my body sprawled on the wet floor, unable to rise as I could no longer support myself. I shivered violently while my lips were reduced to a light shade of blue.
"Get yourself cleaned up, you smell disgusting," he commented quietly, the force of his voice miraculously still present. I couldn't listen to him, not even able to fathom how I could travel to the bathroom, which involved one journey of stairs.
Jacob didn't say anything else before walking back down the driveway and into the dense trees, presumably to shift and do 'pack stuff'.
I just laid there, not having any motivation. "What's the point?" I whispered to myself, my words disappearing into the fall air after they reached my ear.
Come on! I have to do this!
The faucets in my eyes unleashing their tears, I used minute movements to rip my sodden sweatpants off of my ankles- even then becoming out of breath. I shut my eyes briefly, not feeling my tears as they skidded down my cheeks as everything was numb- the only exception was the bubbling heat in my thighs.
