Chapter 44 – Furari Magicae (Danny Conrad POV) Pt. 1
"Danny! Danny!" my name being hissed breaks through the fog in my mind, "Danny you have to wake up!"
Chains tinkering, clinking, "Danny," this time the voice is more insistent, pulling me, forcing me to fight to open my eyes. In the same time, I register much more than just the sounds, but I flex my hands, opening them. The ground beneath rough on my finger tips. Sandy as I try but fail to grip it, my hands only scooping up pebbles between finely grated dirt.
"Danny," the voice hisses once more. My head rolls to face the sound, still blinking against the dimly lit area, until in my line of sight is Cynthia. "Sicut dico, sicut dico, sicut dico," she mumbles incoherently, groaning as though in pain.
"What?"
Blinking and as confused as I am, Cynthia pushes herself up, reaching for me, as I do her. "Danny how could you?" she asks me teary eyed and frowning. Her expression makes me go blank for just a second before everything floods my memory.
Rolling onto all fours, I drop my head, shaking it.
"He betrayed me too," I whisper, grabbing the earth beneath me. "Do you see Danny?" Cynthia whispers, "It's that girl, she – she has this power over people," my wife explains.
My own brother locked me up. I repeat the thought over and over again, each time a piece of myself cracking inside. "You were going to call the Elders," I whisper lifting my head to look at Cynthia, the bars between us.
"I couldn't let you call them-"
"Then you tell me that," she shakes her head, grimacing. "I thought we were on the same page."
"And we were, but not at the expense of my siblings Cynthia."
"The same sibling that put me here, put you next to me," she says pointing out what I was already coming to terms with. "How do we get out of here?"
"I didn't..." crawling closer to the bars, I stop near enough to place my head up against them. "We play along, cooperate," I murmur.
"We have to be on the same page Danny?" Cynthia says unsure, coming to me as far as the chains will let her. I gaze at her for sometime, processing, reluctant to agree. Slowly, after minutes have passed I nod. "We have to be on the same page, that's the only way. I'll-"
Cynthia frowns, biting her lips, shaking her head.
"I don't know how to live somewhere near her," she whispers and with everything said, wrong or right that's what gets me. I couldn't fault Cynthia for not wanting to be around a girl that she felt cost her everything.
"She's innocent in this Cynthia," I still whisper thinking a bit clearer, as chaos ensues. "We cannot run, but I will not let them hurt you, but you need to make a few promises yourself," I say sitting back roughly, eyes on Cynthia.
"My mother bound our children to Bend and to her, we cannot run-"
"How dare she do something like that?"
"She did it to stop us from acting rashly," I parrot over what I recall from our fight. "Cynthia... we cannot call the Elders," I tell her again, this time actually meaning it.
She only gazes at me, waiting for what? I don't know.
"I had to stop you for the family, but for yourself as well Cynthia," Ansel's truth making a bit more sense. "Did you even think to wonder if the Elders still want her?"
"They do," she says coldly.
How do you know that? My mind screams though I remain silent.
"Ansel will not let you out of here if you do not cooperate with him in some way," I state the obvious, igniting a new fire in Cynthia's eyes. "If you had just trusted that I knew what I was doing, we wouldn't be here Danny!" she waves her free hand at the dungeon space we were now being kept in.
"You wanted to call the Elders on my family, you were willing to drug Andy, Cynthia," I say rubbing my head as a weak throbbing grows. "I'll be the first one they let out of here," I murmur, knowingly.
Her chin wobbles, "What about me? How am I supposed to get out? If she is who they are protecting what about me? What about our children?"
"They cannot only see me in this place," she cries looking around. I needed time, I think, but the truth was at the very moment I could see no clear-cut path.
I was the one to blame here. Trying to see Cynthia's side, I understood the urge not to be near the girl. However, now, the only option was remaining wherever Ansel, the family and the girl were. They'd never let Cynthia out of their sight, my mother bounding herself to my children making sense.
If we moved she could remove that part, but they'd always need to be within miles of my mother.
There would be no escaping Faith.
I would never be able to wait out Ansels anger. Let them believe that Cynthia, our children and I would abide by their rules until he released Cynthia. Running away in the middle of the night.
The only person that could undo the spells was my mother. Or a strong Fae, even then any spells done ran the risk of killing my mom, a sure fire way of setting the kids free. Still, by bonding them to Bend, they'd never be able to leave the area.
Had I not became so enraged, I could convince mom to remove the Earth Bonding – leaving only the connection to her.
"I'm your wife, Danny," Cynthia whispers, her tone strong and more confident now. "I did not mean to deceive you," I nod, "I really did not..." is that the truth? The voice in my head whispers now, as the throbbing in my head becomes impossible to ignore.
