Chapter 6

The Letter and the Tea Leaves

Aang couldn't believe it. Something he thought would never, ever happen again was happening. However, just as his mind was registering this blissful moment, Katara had pulled away. Aang anticipated a look of shock and pleasure from her, but that wasn't exactly it. She definitely was shocked, but he also detected a note of anger and terror as she spoke.

"Why did I...how could I...?" "Katara" Aang said, in a reassuring way. "I know that you didn't really mean for that to happen, but listen, you want it to. You love me Katara, and I love you." He went to reach for her, but she pulled away. Aang looked at her, and simply said "What happened with me and Fan...I didn't mean for it to happen. I think you know that, and I know that you want to be with me just as much as I want to be with you."

"Aang, you don't understand" said Katara, clearly terrified at what she had done. "Then, make me" Aang said. Katara looked at him, and said "Aang, just listen to me. For right now, it is best for me not to be with you." "That's not a reason" said Aang, anger in his voice. Katara looked at hi solemnly, and said "Sokka and my dad...if I am with you, something bad might happen to them..." "What?" Aang asked, shockingly. "Why? What's happened?" Katara looked at him, and was about to tell the truth, when-"You two! Bed! Now!" It was Percy. "I want everyone up in bed, NOW!" The rest of the Gryffindor's shuffled to the stairs, and Aang and Katara were split apart.

Aang walked into the dormitory, and saw Dean and Seamud playing wizard's chess, Neville reading a book on Herbology, and Harry and Ron talking. Aang approached, and Harry asked "What happened? You were right behind us." Aang looked at them, and said "It's nothing. Just something I'm going to have to deal with this year." "Katara?" Ron asked. Aang looked at him, and said "Yeah. She just told me that if her and I get together, Sokka and her dad might get hurt. I don't know what that means, but I'm worried, now." "Did she say why?" asked Harry, looking interested. "No" said Aang, looking at the sleeping Sokka on the bed next to them. "All I know is" and he turned back to the other two "I hope it's not another Sirius Black that threatened Katara."

The third-year boys slept in their dormitories that night, when Aang had an awful dream of a female Sirius Black killing Sokka and Hakoda right in front of Katara, who immediately blamed him. Then, after Katara was going to throw him to a rabid room filled with wolf-bats, the dream changed. There was an airbender, and older man with a gray beard, and wrinkles under his eyes. He held up the exact same wand as Aang's. He placed the necklace on, and then, he was in the Avatar State. However, his eyes and tattoos didn't glow white, but a blood red. And just as this happened, Aang awoke.

He was painting, sweating, with the necklace on, and wand in his hand. He looked around the room to make sure nothing had changed, when Sokka opened his eyes. "Aang, you okay?" "Um...yeah...definitely" Aang said, before lying back down. He looked next to him towards Harry's bed, and saw the boy wizard staring back at him. "You're eyes were glowing" Harry said. "Let's hope I didn't make another bison colony appear" said Aang, shutting his eyes again.

The next morning, the boys walked down into the common room, where they were greeted by Katara, Toph and Hermione. Bao also joined them, but was called over by Colin Creevey to talk to, so he didn't get to go down to breakfast with them.

As they got down there, they saw Malfoy entertaining Slytherin's with a funny store. As they past by, they saw him impersonate someone passing out. Aang, filled with rage due to everything he had dealt with, silently twisted his finger. A small just of air flew away, down towards Malfoy's feet, who fell, looking bewildered. Harry grinned.

"Don't do that again, Aang" said Hermione as they sat down at their table. "Just ignore him." George Weasley immediately passed papers to them and said "New third-year course schedules." "Excellent" said Aang. "I need to take my mind off things." Katara felt that this was directed at her, as she took a schedule for herself.
