I jerked awake, breathing hard for a moment as my gaze swung wildly around the room before landing on North's body in the bed next to me. I tried to calm down before giving up and shifting carefully to cuddle into his warmth.
"What's wrong, Sang baby?" His voice was husky with sleep.
"Nothing. I just had a dream... it startled me." I admitted softly. "Go back to sleep, we can talk about it in the morning."
He chuckled. "No, we'll talk about it now, we always do." He rolled over and pulled me into his arms, tucking me fully into his warmth and resting his chin on the top of my head.
"You have had a long day. And you have an even longer day tomorrow." I protested as my arms slid around his body in return as my trembling stopped and I relaxed, now that I wasn't cold.
"I'll be fine." He said. "Baby, tell me about the dream."
"It was weird..." I mumbled, my eyes already closing again. "It was all silver and gold..."
I found myself dreaming
In silver and gold
Like a scene from a movie
That every broken heart knows
"Well, dreaming in color is different than usual." North commented, one of his hands gently stroking my back to help me relax more.
"we were close like this and I don't know. I blinked and you were gone and I was alone."
He shifted onto his back, pulling me onto his chest so that I could prop my chin up on one hand and look at him in the moonlit room. "That does sound a bit like a nightmare after all." He said, gently tracing his hand down the side of my face, pushing my unruly hair away from my face so he could see my eyes.
"But it wasn't scary." I frowned slightly.
"But it was unexpected and a bit startling." He pointed out.
I thought about it for a moment before nodding. "I guess." He chuckled and bent his head down to press a kiss on my forehead. "The alone thing bothered me." I admitted.
North tilted his head and studied me for a long moment before nodding. "Because it's very different." He said. "Even if I'm not around, you're not alone. You'll never be alone."
I tapped my fingers on his chest for a moment before letting them trace the tattoo over his heart, marking the bite marks that I'd given him almost 4 years ago when we were first starting to date and figure out this life we've adopted. "True. Even now, if I couldn't sleep or you weren't home, well, I'd just have to wander next door to find a willing set of arms to help me sleep again."
We were walking on moonlight
And you pulled me close
Split second and you disappeared
And then I was all alone
He chuckled again. "Very true. And that goes for all reasons, even if I get called out for an Academy job, you could just find someone else to snuggle you."
I nodded, reaching up to brush at my eyes. Thoughts of the rest of the family still to this day could bring me to tears just in thinking of all they'd done for me from the beginning. From the first day when I hung out with Kota, Victor and Silas. They'd always protected me and unless there was a stupid reason or I was being stupidly fierce and independent, they never left my side. "it's been that way from the start." I realized, glancing at him. "We have an unofficial theme of being somewhat a band of musketeers."
