Three Days Ago
I struggled to zip up my second suitcase, grunting as I pulled at the zipper. "Nicki!" I called, sitting down on the bed.
She came waltzing into my room in her bikini top, daisy dukes, and kimono. She was a typical blonde Cali girl. Nicki and her boyfriend were going straight to the beach after they dropped me off at LAX and I was going to miss those short walks to the shore with them. "What?" she asked.
"Help me zip this." Nicki sat her tiny frame up on my suitcase, pushing the top to meet the bottom. I was able to zip it up with ease and we high fived. I sighed as I looked at my bags and back at Nicki.
"You're going to do great," she said. Nicki always made everything sound like it was going to be okay, even if it wasn't. I was going to miss her more than I could explain. She'd been my lifeline for the past four years. Without her, I'd be stuck in Indiana, heartbroken and hating everything around me. Her mouth formed into a O as she held up a finger, running out of my room for a moment.
I checked my purse again for my wallet, ticket, and headphones for the flight to New York City. She returned with an object in her hands. "Four years ago you were seventeen and lost," she started. "Now, you're heading to New York to travel the world with a celebrity! I couldn't be more proud of you. I know it hasn't been easy for you, so I want you to have this for luck."
She handed me a sterling silver necklace with a baby's foot charm dangling from the front. I stayed silent as tears welled in my eyes. "Nicki," I whispered. "It's beautiful."
"He's always going to be with you." I looked up at her and threw myself into her arms, hugging her as tight as I could. "I love you, Sammy."
With the necklace clutched in my hand, I closed my eyes as I rested my head on her shoulder. "I love you, too."
"Earth to Samantha," Vivian sang. I snapped back to reality and turned my attention to her.
"I'm so sorry," I muttered, giving her my full attention.
She was scrolling through her phone, her glasses perched on the end of her nose. "I was asking you if you were staying in England or if you were going back to Los Angeles."
I didn't want to tell her I was staying with Harry. I wasn't confident with how she would handle it. Vivian seemed like she could be nice, but she could chew your ass out if she really wanted to. "Um, yeah. I'm just going to stay in a hotel in London so I won't have to spend money on another flight to meet up with the crew before we go to Australia."
Vivian still didn't look up at me. "Perfect. I'll get with you later in the week of where in the airport to meet us along with the time we're departing for Sydney."
