By the next night, Sam still hadn't gotten back with me. I suspected that she was sleeping. All the months on tour can take a toll on your body. I remember after the first tour how I slept for days it seemed. I still sent her another follow up message.

Mum brought me a glass of wine and sat opposite of me on the couch. We were at her place this time. I hadn't been to my home since I'd been there with Sam. I took a sip of my wine as she said, "So, how is Sam?"

I smirked. "She's great. She's in LA right now," I explained.

She nodded and smiled. "I like her, much more than some of your other choices."

Mum was always protective and I didn't blame her. We were close, and with my fame, her motherly instincts seemed to kick into overdrive. She eventually learned that she couldn't protect me from everything, despite her determination.

"She's pretty great," I agreed. Great didn't even describe her, but I wasn't about to explain all my real feelings for Sam to my own mother.

Mum caught my eye as she took a sip of wine. She smiled and shook her head. "You're in love."

                  I shrugged. "And?"

She went to speak but my phone rang, Sam's name flashing across the screen. Mum told me to take it and I swiped my hand across the answer button as I exited the room. "Hello?" I answered.

"Hi," Sam yawned on the other line.

I looked at the clock on the stove. "Did you just wake up? What is it, noon over there?"

"I was tired! Not everyone is used to flying all around the world," she retorted.

Chuckling, I said, "What's your plan today?"

"I think we're going to go to the beach, maybe do some shopping."

                  "Such a girl," I teased.

She fumbled around on the other end. "How are things at home? Tell Anne I said hi."

"Things are great. While I like being home I actually can't wait to go to New York and start recording the new album," I replied.

There was a smile in her voice. "I wish I could be there to hear it happen."

I was relieved Sam was allowed to take extra time off in Los Angeles while we were in New York recording. I had a song I'd written with her in mind, and I knew that she'd know the second she heard the lyrics. I didn't want her to be there when I recorded it. I wanted it to be a surprise.
