I woke with a stiff neck and a numb arm as well as my right leg dangling off the couch. Lux's little face was right in front of mine, staring intently. I lifted my head up and rubbed my eyes. "What time is it?" I wondered out loud.
"Ten o'clock," Lou answered as she exited the bathroom, shoving a pair of earrings in.
Lux took one of my black locks in her little fingers and gently twisted. "Can I do your hair today?" she asked sweetly.
I gave her a tiny smile and nodded, slowly sitting up. "Let me get ready and I'll go get the boys so we can head for the stadium." Lou nodded and I stood, walking over to my suitcase to pick out an outfit.
Three days.
I hadn't spoken to Harry in three days unless it had to do with Vivian's instructions or the show. What he had suggested really set me off and made me so pissed at him that I was crying on the phone to Nicki at three in the morning and then pounding on Lou's door soon after. What turned into one night had turned into three different nights in three different hotels, but I wasn't ready to face him yet.
He knew how I felt about my parents, and for him to think that going up to their door and telling them that I wanted to talk was going to be so easy was disheartening and it hurt me. The morning after our "fight", he was apologizing profusely and following me around like a lost puppy until I yelled at him to go away. The second day he had attempted at small talk, but I wouldn't let myself be alone with him. I only wondered what he'd do today.
I still didn't know what to say to him to make him understand. He didn't have a shitty relationship with his family. He didn't get knocked up at seventeen and get disowned. He didn't leave everything behind because he was so broken he felt like he couldn't breathe. I felt like I could explain it to him every day and he still just wouldn't get it.
Lux interrupted my thoughts by dragging a brush harshly through my knotted hair and I winced. "Sorry," she muttered and went back to work. I'd dressed myself in shorts and tank top, ready to get back out in the California heat. We were in San Diego and Nicki was meeting me for lunch after the boys had their sound check.
I was eager to meet back up with her and see her. It felt like a lifetime since I'd seen her face and after the week I'd had, I wanted to rant to her until I was blue in the face. Lux tugged at my hair in a pattern that felt like a braid. A moment later she said she was finished, trying her best to tie it off. It was loose and falling apart, and it wasn't even a braid, but she was so adorable. I kissed her cheek. "Thanks, Lux. It looks great."
She grinned and I stood, my phone dinging with a text from Vivian just as I did. She wanted me to go and get the boys so we could head for the stadium. "We're leaving soon," I announced to Lou who called over Lux to get ready. I left the room still in Lux's braid, not wanting to hurt her feelings.
