Was that a mistake?
Or was it fate?
•••••••••
It all started on a random July night in a dark room with colorful walls.
I had just gotten out of the shower, where I usually washed away all the stress from the school day.
But not now! It was summer!
I planned on listening to music, playing some video games, and possibly writing.
I pulled out my phone and checked a couple things.
My friend Chris had tried to text me about getting together the next day, so I responded to him.
As I left, I noticed something. Something I had not seen in so long.
Her name.
Where is it?
She was not even in my recent contacts. She was towards the bottom.
I scratched my beard that I didn't have. Ever since we lost contact, she had been the only one who had ever texted me.
I never texted her.
Figuring I owed her a decent conversation, I decided to ask what she was doing.
Almost instantly, she was back in my clutches. It wasn't the same, though; it was not as refreshing as before.
I wanted a legitimate talk. Nothing more. I had no feelings anymore. I was a heartless human who had some explaining to do.
It felt weird when she texted back. I waited for that usual adrenaline rush, but all I got was silence.
"I'm staying up as usual," she said.
Of course.
I stuck my earbuds in, and the music started up.
"So how's your summer going so far?" I inquired, an honest question that seemed too simple for our usual talks.
"Uhh, it's going well," she answered. "How about you?"
Not as good as I'd hoped.
The music buzzed from the computer, through my earbuds, and into my ear.
I started to move a little more than before.
My heart beat steadily.
"My summer has been alright I guess," I stated flatly, nothing else coming to mind.
"I'm so emotional right now!" she said, seemingly pulling that from the sky.
I sort of laughed, but I remained still. "Why?" Adding a laughing face would help ease some of the tension.
"I don't know, I'm just in one of those moods. You know?"
I chose a slow pop song, and my heart lifted off the ground a little as it began.
My heart showed more signs of life.
I looked out the window after I sent the text. "I know pretty well. I've been in one of those moods the whole summer."
Outside, I noticed a tall oak tree's branches swaying in the distance. The sky was abnormally dark, as if Zues was fighting with the rest of the gods.
