32: Kai

Areum's POV:

"Annyeong- T-Tae?" Taehyung. At my house. How did he find out where I live? It doesn't matter. He looks so weak. His usually hazel mint bouncy hair was simply resting on his head. His melting smile had been replaced by a straight mouth.  The beautiful sparkle in his eyes wasn't there anymore.

He wasn't Tae. He wasn't my Taehyung.

"Areum." He said, slightly shivering.

I gave him a tight hug. He looked so miserable.

"What happened?" I said, bringing him in to sit next to me.

"Who was at the door- who's this?"  My eomma hadn't met Taehyung or Jungkook yet.

"This is Taehyung, eomma. He's a friend." She nodded, and went upstairs.

"Taehyung. What's wrong?" I said, bringing his face in front of mine.

A tear leaked out his left eye.

I patted his head, and he dropped his head onto my lap. Thank God I'd been crossing my legs.

"My sister. My little sister. She's- gone."

"Your- sister?" I was really confused. I didn't know about this sister. He never told me.

"W-What happened to her?" I was afraid to ask but I had to.

"She had cancer. The doctors said she'd be fine in a few of months. Me and my eomma went to check on her last night. Some virus had instantly- killed her." And he broke down. I know how he feels. I've felt like I've lost a sibling before.

Flashback

10 years ago. 6 year old Areum is running around with her best friend. Kai. He's so cute, she thinks. He's two years older than her. They've known each other since Areum started to walk. Her first word was 'Kai-ah'. Kai had been saying his name in front of her the whole day, hoping she'd catch on. The two children grab their bikes, riding along the pavement.

"Hey! Areum-ah! Look at me!" He says, taking his hand off the bike every few seconds.

"Yah! Don't get hurt oppa!" She yells worriedly at him.

"Don't worry!" He says as they race without communicating.

Kai hears one of his favourite songs from a distance away.

"Let's find where it's coming from!" He says.

"Ani, don't we have to cross the road for that?" Areum replies.

"I said don't worry! Let's go!" He shouts excitedly. Neither had learnt to cross the roads yet.

Three roads to cross lie in front of them. Kai waves at Areum and bikes across as he passes the first two streets.

As Kai starts to cross the third road, he gets blinded by the coming car and loses track of the pedals. The car doesn't stop in time. Areum still hasn't crossed the road. She realises what's happened. A tear spills out her left eye.

"KAI!" She tells as passing people pull her away from the accident.

"KAI-AH! SAY SOMETHING!" She screams her lungs out. There's nothing she can do. There isn't a chance of saving him. He's gone. Kai's- gone.
