What is Urban-Fantasy?

Urban Fantasy is sometimes called modern fantasy. Essentially it's a darker fantasy set in the real world in a present or not to distant future. As the name suggests, the setting is usually a big city or near it.

What would a user gain out of following the profile?

Readers can easily find a list of completed or near completed Urban Fantasy Books. For Writers we are going to host contests, prompts, and our How To's book offers a lot of online resources to help them write their Urban fantasy.

What do you think differentiates Urban Fantasy from Paranormal?

Urban fantasy has a more magic element to it and deals with more non-human creatures were as Paranormal there is little to no magic and it's more centered on humans. I. E. the werewolf in an fantasy story would be seen as a creature other than human. Magic allowing it to shift from one form to the other. In Paranormal it would be a human afflicted with a curse or something similar.

Are there any projects in the work that you're looking forward to?

What are you all doing for Halloween?

We have a lot of projects in progress. We want to get interviews started soon. We have an idea for reader polls to help writers see what Wattpad readers are really looking for. Specifically Halloween we're going to have a short story/excerpt contest involving a supernatural being with a Halloween or spooky/scary theme with two winners. One Ambassador chosen and another chosen by the readers.

That sounds really exciting! Definitely a lot to look forward to!

What are some of your favorite tropes seen in Urban Fantasy?

Which ones are popular right now, and which ones are starting to become cliché?

The private investigator angle, where a MC owns a PI business and the plot revolves around them investigating a crime is the most cliché. Vampires, Witches, and Werewolves are a bit over used and cliché as well. Fae and Demons are right up there with them, but they don't have a big a presence. The genre on a whole usually tends to levitate towards an investigative plot whether it be criminal, kidnapping, or even the MC's origins. These are usually very exciting reads.

We'd like to see some other creatures get their spotlight. There are so many: Banshee, Sirens, Succubus/Incubus, and more that could use their time in the spot light.

What are some published authors who define the genre that people could read to get an idea of how to write?

Do you have any personal favorites?

On Wattpad there is MNJGreenhill. Her series, Masked, Buried, and Evolve, are a really good example of Urban Fantasy, though it has a stronger romance subplot too it. Kim_Harrison is a published author of the Hallows series, she has a short story pertaining to that world here on Wattpad. Lastly I would say CCGillings and her Shadow Wolf books are good examples too.

Outside of Wattpad anyone wanting to see how to write a great Urban Fantasy book should read the Kate Daniels series by ilona Andrews.

ilona Andrews is actually a husband/wife duo, but they are my personal favorite. MNJGreenhill here on Wattpad is another inspiration.

We love Ilona Andrews as well! We also adore Patricia Brigg's "Mercy Thompson" series.
