The doctor had taken me and Lavi back to his house where he healed Lavi. Soon, Lavi came-to again and asked, "Where are we?"

"At the doctor's house." I replied plainly, trying to stay calm. I stared at the man who claimed to be Bethany's dad. I remembered something she told me- "He always abused me after I got home from school, but on Wednesdays, my friends would take me home so I wouldn't have to be with him."

The doctor walked into the room, and the first thing that came out of my mouth was:

"You... you... YOU WERE THE ONE WHO HURT BETHANY, YOU JERK!" I stood up from sitting on Lavi's bed and slapped him in the face. Lavi just stared at me like I was insane.

"I wasn't the man who raised her," He stated, and as I was about to apologize, "But I was the one who left her with the man who abused her. I regret it every day." His eyes stared at the floor.

Everyone was silent until Bethany's dad broke through.

"How did she turn out?" His eyes finally met mine.

"What do you mean?" I asked, comfused.

"I mean, how did she turn out? Is she antisocial, angry, sad, depressed?" He practically begged me for an answer.

I thought through my answer carefully, then replied, "She's the greatest best friend I could ask for." I smiled.

Bethany's father sighed with relief, "Thank goodness. I was worried she would never love anything again. Especially..."

I was curious. Lavi looked curious too, he wanted to know if this man knew her soft spot.

"What?" Lavi

"Well, Bethany was a sweet little girl when she was born. She looked just like me," Her dad bragged, "and many were jealous of her. My wife was a strong lady, but she became sick after having little Beth and couldn't take care of her like a mother deserves to. Eventually," Bethany's dad held in a sob, "My wife died. It was as if Beth had stopped living altogether, even though she was still a only a few months old. I raised Bethany alone for three years, and by then, she had started talking. Bethany was never that soft, sweet child ever again. She held in her emotions and locked her true self behind a solid, concrete, indestructable wall. That's why I never saw her cry.

"One day, Beth and I were on a walk in the park. It was the only place where Bethany would smile in those days. A man ran up to us and said, 'Get your girl out of here! She might die if you continue to show her off to everyone!'. I was very confused, but I took his advice. He brought me to a book, and I flipped through the pages until I started feeling strange. Bethany only looked around with interest, but the area around us was horrible! It was all distorted and swirly, and Bethany and I were in the middle of it. We saw the very man who saved our lives wave at us before... getting shot in the head." Once he said that last part, I gasped, but Bethany's dad just kept talking, "We were warped into an alternate dimension where things were futuristic and strange, but I somehow found my way to a place where Bethany and I could rest. After seeing the man die before our eyes, Bethany wouldn't talk to me at all. I kept calling her name, but she stared straight ahead. I had no idea what was going on, but a man walked up to me with his wife. He said, 'We've been wanting a child for a long time. Is there any chance we could take care of yours? I promise, we'll take great care of her, but you look like you can't do anything for her anymore.' And me, being the parent I am, agreed because I thought it was the best for my little Bethany. When the man picked her up, she whimpered and tried to get back to me," He continued, "And all I did was leave her. I left her with that man without making sure that me was trustworthy. I am such an idiot!" Bethany's dad finally finished. Lavi and I stared at him for a moment, and then I went up and slapped him in the face.

"Yes, you are an idiot!" I yelled angerly, then my facial expression softened, "But I'm sure that Bethany will understand." I gave the man a hug.

He seemed to register what I said, and his eyes shot wide open, "You're saying that Beth is HERE?! No, she can't! If she's here, then things must be turning bad!"

"Um... Yes, Bethany is here. Where do you think came from?" I asked the man, a very confused Lavi standing behind me.

"You mean... WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THIS WORLD?!" Bethany's dad screamed to the ceiling.

"I don't know how I got here, I don't know what's happening, I just don't know." I whispered so that Lavi wouldn't hear what I said.

~"~"~

"Thank you!" I yelled from the window of the train, "We appreaciate your help!"

"It was my pleasure," Bethany's dad called out.

I stuck my head back inside of the window, and smiled to myself. Even though the meeting was grim, it was great knowing Bethany's dad was a good person.

"Now, we've got to get to our assignment- It's in China, apparently," Lavi focused on the pamphlet.

"Yeah, I guess so..." My voice trailed off and I got sleepier and sleepier... until, eventually, I fell asleep.

Bad idea.

Yay! We learned about Bethany's troubled past! Actually, it's really depressing, and I'm sorry that this chapter couldn't be longer, but I kinda sorta HAVE A LIFE, so no hate <33
