I've never seen a life outside of the walls.I've heard the stories my dad used to tell me as a little girl and have read history books dating back to before the outbreak, but I can't imagine a way to live other than within the protection of the enclosure.
My people have been taught to fear the outside. That it is nothing more than death and ruination. They tell us the safest place we can be is within the enclosure walls.
But they don't always make it feel that way...
The plague broke out 15 years ago, four years after I was born, so I never really got to experience what the old world was like.
When the plague commenced, it wiped out over 90% of the human population. The virus was a worldwide pandemic, accidentally created by scientists in search for a cure to cancer.
The plague has five stages.
STAGE 1 - Continuously Throwing Up and Develops Rashes
STAGE 2 - Experiences Hallucinations, Dizziness, and Feebleness
STAGE 3 - Body Goes Into a Deep Coma
STAGE 4 - Body Slowly Starts to Deteriorate Until Completely Shutting Down
STAGE 5 - Comes Back To Life As a RoamerYes, you heard that right. You come back to life.
You probably think that coming back to life would be a good thing, correct?
Well, it's far from it.
Roamers are something like the fictitious creatures people made up back in the day....wait—what did they call them.....?
Oh right, Zombies.
Roamers are creatures who wander around aimlessly, hence the name.
Unlike a zombie though, Roamers don't try to eat your brains out.
But don't think that because they aren't some flesh craving monsters, it makes them seemingly harmless.
Because they are anything but safe.
Roamers are violent, and all share the same common goal. To kill. Whoever they can get their hands on, in whatever way possible.
And to add to that, if you come in contact with a Roamer, so much even as a foot away, you are immediately prone to being infected.
So yeah, they're much worst than the creatures you call zombies. Plus, they're not fictional and are very much the real deal.
So with billions dead worldwide, and humanity on the brink of extinction, the U.S. government rounded up the remaining survivors and created the "Enclosure."
The enclosure was a wall that barricaded the survivors from the outside world, holding a total of 50,000 people in all.
But with no form of any real legislation left, and unsure of how to keep tranquility and prosperity amongst the people, the government separated the enclosure into a series of quarters.
Quarters were made by our government to keep peace amongst the remaining survivors. They set the enclosure up in a way where people of similar character traits would be merged together into one section of the compound, while also being separated from others of different character traits. In their minds, this would give people a chance to be able to connect all while avoiding problems and altercations with the outer quarters.
There are 6 quarters in total.
The first quarter is home to the Indulgents. These guys are the brains of the six quarters. Indulgents are intelligent beyond what this system we call education can cope with. They are quick thinkers and can recall ample amounts information, picking up new things quite easily.
Secondly, are the Sapients. Sapients don't have a bad bone in their body....at least that I know of. Sapients are known for their kindness, always putting others before themselves. But with their eagerness to do good and impress, it often blinds them from the deceit in the world and how naive they can be at times.
The third quarter belongs to the Vulpines. Vulpines don't have the best reputation amongst the six quarters, and people know to watch out for them. Known for their deceitful and two faced ways, Vulpines are sneaky and rather enjoy the thrill of pushing the limits. A Vulpine won't think twice before stabbing you in the back after getting whatever they wanted from you. They're very calculated, waiting for the right moment to pounce and screw you over.
Fourthly, are the Brawns. The Brawns are acknowledged for their impressive physical abilities. Exhibiting immense amounts of strength, speed, coordination, accuracy, agility, endurance, and flexibility, the Brawns are easily at the top of the food chain amongst the quarters. But even with the physical package locked in, they still can't avoid their simpleton ways.
The fifth quarter belongs to the Untouchables. The Untouchables live in the far end of the enclosure, isolated from the rest of the quarters. They are the outcasts in the "new world." Rebels who were either kicked out or decided to leave their quarter. In here, leaving your quarter was the sin of all sins someone could commit. For that reason, no one associates with the Untouchables for they have a horrible reputation. We've been taught growing up to stay away from an Untouchable because of their dangerous and unpredictable nature. They are nothing but bad news.
And lastly there are the Lionhearts, my faction. Lionhearts are known for their exceptional fortitude and ability to be noble under extreme pressure. Never relinquishing an opportunity to face their own fears, Lionhearts are the epitome of courage.
Being brave for me was always a conscious choice. When I see a tidal wave of fear my feet want to run away in the opposite direction, of course they do. Yet instead I choose to ride the wave and see where it takes me.
I am not a fearless person by nature, quite the opposite actually. But I will not let myself be overtaken by such a basic emotion, a primal urge. I make sure that my brain will always be the part to lead me, listening to my instincts and making the right choices.
But even with being a Lionheart, nothing could have prepared me for that unnerving day.
The day I got drafted for The Mortal Trials.
