Home Sweet Bunker - Part 1Leaves crumple under my shoes as I trudge through the underbrush of the forest. I hold a stick on my left side to prop me up, taking pressure off of my bad leg.
Kaiden trails behind me quietly as we make our way through the woods and back to the bunker.
I try to step over a fallen tree trunk blocking the path, but my bad leg comes short, causing me to stumble forward.
Luckily, I'm able to steady myself with my stick before face planting into the dirt.
"You need help up there?" Kaiden asks, his amusement seeping through his words.
I keep my attention ahead, not looking back.
"I'm fine." I grumble, throwing a dismissive hand up at him, "I think this stick is more trustworthy than you."
He lets out a low whistle and I can mentally envision him shaking his head. "Kyla, this is a competition. There doesn't have to be bad blood between us."
"Bad blood?" I have to resist the urge to turn and go off on him, "There is something called human decency, okay? Yeah, this might be a game but it's also deals with people's lives. No likes to be a pawn in anyone's game."
"You weren't a pawn." he answers monotonously.
"Oh yeah?" I scoff at him, "Then what was I?"
He doesn't answer.
That's what I thought.
I sigh, and rub my hand over the temple of my head. "Look, it doesn't matter. You're right. This is a game and I lost sight of that for a while. It's better this way from here on out."
"Yeah...." he answers.
It goes quiet as we begin to walk in silence again.
Thank god.
But unfortunately, the silence doesn't last long.
"So, you know where we're going?" Kaiden calls out from behind, his voice echoing through the trees.
What kind of question is that?
"Yes, Kaiden." I nod my head at him.
He's silent for a second before continuing.
"If that's the case, then why are we going in circles?"
I stop in my tracks and whirl around to face him. "What do you mean going in circles? We're going down the right path! I'm the only one who knows where the hideout is!"
He raises a brow and points to the left at the fallen tree on the ground.
It's the same one I tripped over earlier.
"This is our fourth time passing that tree trunk." he pauses before giving a shrug. He holds out his hand for me to lead the way, "But who's counting, right? By all means, please continue."
