Chapter 25- A Timely Discovery
I finally escaped the crowd, after signing about thirty autographs, hugging ten or so kids, and taking countless pictures. I got into my car, panting with exhaustion. Or was it anger? That fact didn’t matter at the moment. The point was that this whole trip was unnecessary. If I had wanted to get pounded by fans, I could’ve just stayed home, in the comfort of Hollywood. Whatever, I thought.
In reality, I enjoyed the attention. Somehow I knew that if I ever lost the chance of fans hanging around, I would miss it tremendously. But sometimes, it was nice to have a bit of a break from all the screaming, staring, and ‘googly’ eyes. And that was why the girl I’d just met, Kaylen, was so refreshing. She was so different, so different that I couldn’t even tell if she was interested in me. And that was a rare thing for me. Most girls could try to hide their feelings, but eventually, I would know if they were pining fans or if they really just despised me. Kaylen, on the other hand, she was nonchalant; not to mention hot.
After calming down a bit, I started the rental’s engine, hearing the safe purr and knowing that I was free from bombardment. For now. But when I got to my grandparents… that would be another story. They would hug and kiss on me until my face was rubbed raw; my granny would insist that I move back here, because I’m still her ‘little grand-baby’. What luck!
It wasn’t like I disliked spending time with my grandparents, or my parents, for that matter. It was the constant questions. ‘How’s your acting career going?’ ‘When do you think you’ll retire?’ and the worst one: ‘Have you found a nice girl yet, Taylor?’ The latter always came straight from my grandmother’s ‘warm’ smiling lips.
And I would always answer the same. My acting career is fine. I have no clue about retirement. And no, I don’t have a steady girlfriend yet. That answer usually drove them over the creek. “Back in my day, girls and boys got married at about your age, Taylor,” Granny would say. Papa would just sit and sip coffee, watching the Military channel. I loved him for that in those instances. I would have to respond in the least offensive way possible. “Sorry, Granny. I just haven’t found ‘The One’.” She would just nod and shoot me a condescending glance that made me wish I would just go ahead and imprint on a girl, just like the mysterious Jacob Black.
My mom had flown out to my apartment to stay for a few days. My father, on the other hand, had ‘business’ to take care of. He would be at the house when I got there. And then the three of us were off to Granny and Papa’s. I pulled into the driveway of my two-story home, the one that I had grown up in. I really didn’t remember much about the place. I remembered auditioning for some little Nerf Battle Gun commercial, making the part, and then off to L.A. it was for me.
I remember little else about the house, the friends I had here, or even what kinds of toys I left behind. I made it a point to raid through some of my old toys. It would be fun to try and recall those old days. I stepped up onto the porch, and something told me to turn around; as I did so, the view made my heart skip a beat. The sun was setting over the woods across the street. The moon, in all its glory, was already out, shining dimly as it prepared to take the sun’s place in the night sky.
