Chapter 9- My Shot at Fame
I smiled at the luxury of being with someone I cared about. It wasn't something that everyone was able to enjoy, and I counted myself extremely lucky. Kaylen looked at me with those cute blue eyes of hers, and I couldn't help but wonder what she was thinking.
"What?" I finally asked.
"Just... thinking." She said, and finally her attention was turned to her homework. I'd known a 'study session' with Kaylen was no good, for this specific reason: No homework would get finished. But I'd invited her over anyway, I guessed for that same reason. Who needed homework in the long run?
'Definitely not me...' I thought as I lost myself in her presence again.
After a few minutes, I was able to concentrate on work. Today I had Math, Social Studies, and English homework. What a bore.
I hoped that by getting finished quickly that we would have some time to spend in our 'place', but all hope was lost after I remembered that my mom knew that Kaylen and I were 'together'. She would never allow that...anymore. For this, I respected my mother. No one could ever underestimate the power of hormones. I giggled inside at the thought.
When we'd finally finished our homework, we took second best at being alone: in front of the TV with my mom bustling around in the kitchen. At this point, it was the least I could ask for. The phone rang, and I was glad my mom had to leave the room. I took the opportunity to give Kaylen a small peck on the cheek.
Kaylen looked around quickly after I did this, expecting my mom to yell. "The phone's in the other room." I reminded her. I leaned in smoothly to kiss her lips, but we were rudely interrupted.
"Grab your coats, right now." My mom came back out of the back room in a sprint.
"Why?" We both asked in unison.
"Just do it!"
We suited up for the cold wintry air, and finally I had the presence of mind to ask my mom what had happened. "Will you please? Tell us what's going on?"
"You made the commercial!" My mom shouted in my ear. "You and Kevin both made the commercial, and we're going out with his family to celebrate!"
"That's awesome!" Kaylen gave me a huge hug, and I smiled as I thought about what kind of career lay ahead of me. I was actually too stunned, appalled, and happy to speak.
I considered it sad that I wasn't surprised. It made me feel... disconnected, I guessed. Conceited, maybe? I had known and been pretty confident that Kevin and I had made it. I guess deep down it wasn't as much of a victory anymore.
I did rejoice, to some extent, when Kaylen was invited to come with us. We loaded ourselves into the van and started off to Kevin's house. The drive was short; I hadn't realized how close Kevin lived to us. When we pulled into the concrete circle drive, Kevin came rushing out of the house. He was dressed nicely, but had on no shoes or a coat.
He smiled hugely when he saw me, and I couldn't fake it. I grinned back, proud of my accomplishment and proud of Kevin. He ran down the drive and I jumped out of the van to meet him. "Can you believe it? All that hard work paid off!" He said, hugging me.
"I can't." I lied, because in reality, I felt I was much more than everyone saw. I was good, and I could believe that we'd made it. But I could still party with the rest of them, I decided. "What's the plan?" I inquired, my mom and Kaylen still stepping out of the car.
