Lucifer had glanced up from the cream leather couch where he'd been unpacking everything; all that was left was a frame of a familiar breathtakingly beautiful blonde, her daughter and Detective Douche. Seeing how happy she appeared in the photo made his heart clench, wishing he could give her that similar sense of happiness. Be the man who handed her the world...which if it were possible, he would. But he was simply a devil hiding behind honeyed eyes.
Lucifer didn't believe he even deserved to be around her - especially not after what he'd done. What he was sadly capable of. If Chloe found out what had happened that night, he feared he'd never lay eyes on the woman he loved again.
A light tap of footsteps caught Lucifer's attention, Trixie skipping towards him with a sweet smile. The man met her with a raised eyebrow before his gaze fell upon the pink tinted paper the young girl held between her hands.
"I drew you a picture." Trixie told him almost shyly as she extended it out for him to admire. Lucifer's smile drifted into a genuine one, taking a hold of the drawing.
"I guess it's pretty good for an eight year old. Thank you, Beatrice." Lucifer complimented, staring down at the scrambled doodle.
It was him, holding hands with none other than Chloe, a thought that caused a warmth in his heart.
The sound of her daughters name leaving the mouth watering mans mouth, made Chloe look up from her paperwork that was piled messily on her dining table. It was a known fact that he never said Trixie's name. It was always, child, small human or occasionally offspring. Chloe was starting to feel an inkling of worry seep into her thoughts.
What was going on with Lucifer? Was he about to call her Chloe instead of Detective? Questions flowed through her mind faster than she could process them. She hadn't failed to notice how odd he'd been coming across the past handful of weeks.
"Monkey, the babysitters on her way." Chloe told her, crouching down to Trixie's height, placing a chaste kiss upon her daughters cheek. "I'll be back in a few hours."
Trixie just nodded, by now she was used to her mom having to dash out for investigations whenever the phone rang.
"Okay, but please be safe, Lucifer too. I love you."
"We will, sweetie. I love you too, be good."
The detective held her daughter, giving her one last kiss before getting to her feet. The petite woman signalling to Lucifer that it was time to go. Lucifer caught on, heading towards the front door, neatly folding the drawing and putting it in his top pocket where it would remain safe. He felt arms wrap around his middle once more, making him still at the unexpected contact.
"Goodbye Lucifer, I hope you liked my drawing."
"Ah, yes, goodbye, child." Lucifer cleared his throat as she unlatched herself from him, giving him a toothy smile before Lucifer closed the door behind him.
The dark haired man making his way to the detective's car, climbing into the passenger seat, awaiting Chloe's arrival.
Lucifer watched as a woman - whom appeared to be in her thirties - began heading up the pathway to the small house. Noticing Chloe say a few words of greeting before strolling towards him and clambering into the front seat, twisting the key as the car roared to life.
"What did Trixie draw for you?" Chloe asked curiously, eager to know if the drawing contained her.
"Just the two of us. I assume she meant for it resemble us, although it looks more like two stick figures." Lucifer grinned in amusement.
He reached into his handkerchief pocket, unfolding the paper to allow the girl's mother to take a gander, she looked like she'd just been given a puppy. It never brushed past him how anything her daughter did, could bring the woman to joyous tears. He wondered if that was how his mother was with him, when he was just a small sprout.
"Lucifer," Chloe's heart melted at the sight, her hand resting over her heart. Her blue eyes met Lucifer's earthy hues as she continued, "Trixie thinks the world of you."
"Yes, well...she shouldn't. I'm the devil, Detective. Having a soft spot for the devil never ends well for anyone now, does it?" Lucifer uttered, switching his gaze out towards the road that stretched out before them. Self hatred clouding his vision.
Chloe never knew whether to believe his whole devil charade or not. The blonde often found that sometimes the things he could somehow do, would convince her that he really was the devil - but her mind always appears to find logical excuses for what he was capable.
"I happen to like you, nothing's happened to me yet." Chloe pointed out, giving him a side glance before concentrating back to the road.
"Yes it has, Detective. You were involved in a crash and almost killed multiple times because of me, but I couldn't, I-I had to--" Lucifer stopped himself, not wanting to confess to what he had to do in order to protect her. After what he did, murdering his own brother - his father wouldn't forgive as easily as his mother had, he was just putting Chloe in more danger. "I shouldn't even be here - it's just putting you in further danger, but maybe...if I'm around I can at least protect you."
Chloe knew she was on the verge of getting him to spill whatever had been bothering him these past few days but he'd stopped, looking down at his empty lap, done with the conversation. The woman felt the urge to argue, to tell him it wasn't his job to protect her, she wanted to say she didn't need protecting but she was terrified Lucifer would agree and abandon her, she couldn't risk that.
"Lucifer, you had nothing to do with the accident. None of it was your fault, risking my life...it comes with the job."
"No, you don't understand--"
"Then make me understand, Lucifer. What the hell has been going on with you?" Chloe interrupted, her voice sharp, she was used to getting into arguments with Lucifer but this time she wanted an answer and she was determined to get one, even if it took all her efforts to get it out of him.
But despite her words, he didn't reply, he'd changed back into the mopey man he'd been a couple days ago. Chloe sighed, loud enough for him to hear her disappointment, she hated that he was reluctant to let her in, he was always so honest with her.
"Lucifer. I've told you god knows how many times that I'm here if you need to talk."
Lucifer never knew how to respond to that, he usually would just pull a face and someone would interrupt them so he didn't have to answer but this time they were stuck in a car, there was no distractions. "It's best if I don't tell you, Detective. You wouldn't believe me anyway."
"Is this about that 'my mums killing people to get back at me and then she'll come kill me thing?' Because I'm used to your weird conspiracy theories about your family by now." Chloe pried, attempting to get some sort of an answer from the man she was so fond of.
"Mother has been surprisingly helpful for once - it's nothing to do with her, she's safe now. It's you that I worry about, Detective." Lucifer sighed his voice small, but Chloe caught every word.
The petite woman pulled up to the crime scene, yellow tape surrounding a house, it was time she pushed her feelings aside and acted professional. Chloe released an exasperated sigh, switching off the engine and placing her hand over Lucifer's which she knew probably made him uncomfortable, but she locked with his muddy brown orbs whether he liked it or not.
"Lucifer look at me," He did as he was told, unsure if they were about to have one of those little moments but he hoped not. Lucifer didn't need his feelings towards her growing more than they already had, "I'm fine, look I'm still living and breathing, I don't need you to worry about me. If that's what you've been moping around about, then stop, please."
"I have not been moping around," Lucifer frowned, moving his hand away from hers. It was a move he quickly regretted, missing the warm of her touch. "Let's just get on with this job, the quicker it's solved the faster I can get home and have a drink."
