Marika's POV

I felt a hand on my shoulder as it shook me awake. I rolled over and pulled the blanket all the way to my head and went back to sleep.

"Marika, get ready. Our good ol' neighbors will be picking you up." I heard mom emphasized the last part, I shot up and almost hit mother's head.

"I told you *cough* I don't want to go with any of them!" I shouted in a daze.

"Well, forgive me but you have to!" Mom snapped back. "They are well on their way."

I abruptly stood up angrily and glared at her as I made my way to the bathroom and go wash up before the neighbors get here. I didn't have to change clothes because I fell asleep last night while wearing my gray hoodie and black pants. I brushed my black hair.

"I can't believe you're doing this to me." I hissed at mom while walking over to my stuff.

"I just want what's best for you." She replied.

"Well, you don't know what's best for me!" I shouted in rage.

"Don't raise your tone at me, Marika!" Anger flared through mom's eyes as she abruptly stood up. "Now, you're coming with them whether you like it or not!"

"So you're just going to hand me over to someone you barely know, are you going to abandon me like my old mother!?" I stood my ground.

"I am your mother, YOU listen to ME!"

"You're not my mother!"

A jolt of pain rushed to the side of my face as mom slapped me hard across the cheek, I fell down due to the impact. Hot tears rolled down my face as seconds of silence passed by, I instantly regretted having an argument with her. Mom stood there with her back turned to me, obviously crying.

Seeing her cry felt awful, knowing that I was the reason felt worse. But because of my pride and self-esteem, I dont even know how to apologize.

There was a knock on the door, mom quickly wiped her tears away and so did I. I stood up the same time mom opened the doors, revealing . . .

The Johnsons.

Why them of all people!?

I grabbed my backpack and hurriedly left the room and just stood there waiting for the couple and their kid, Billy, to finish whatever they need to talk about. I wallow in guilt and self-pity as the minutes passed by, what was I even thinking? Saying those things to her . . .

I noticed on the corner of my eyes, Billy giving me a few glares every now and then but decided to ignore him. I gave a sigh and thought of how to apologize to mom but my ego keeps telling me that I was the right one. Ugh, my mind is so messed up.

Then, I noticed how Billy was staring at me with unblinking eyes and got pissed.

"What the hell do you want!?" I whisper-yelled at him with a hoarse voice. He rolled his eyes and went back inside, fucking kid.

After a while, Barbara and her husband who's-name-I-do-not-know came out with that usual smile. We walked through the hallways and out to the parking lot in silence, I hopped into their car and we drove away from the hospital, away from mom and Jeff.

"So, Marika, is it?" Mrs. Johnson's husband asked.

"Yes, Mr. Johnson." I replied boorishly followed by a cough.

"Just call me Robert." He smiled at me through the rearview mirror, I gave him a small smile back. After a few seconds, I decided to speak up.

"Um . . . I just want to say sorry, because of me and Jeff, the birthday party got a bit . . ." I didn't finish my words.

"Actually, we felt really bad because those things happened to you in our house, we're also sorry. Your parents and I already discussed it, let's just forget it." Mrs. Johnson grinned, I smiled back at her. Atleast she's a reasonable person . . .

Billy and I were sitting at the back and distanced ourselves from each other as much as possible. Minutes passed by as we drove in silence. Mr. Johnson, I mean 'Uncle Robert' occasionally starts a small talk every now and then and I keep on coughing. Ugh

We reached our house and parked in front of it, "Marika, grab what you'll need for atleast a week. Make sure you have everything you need." Mrs. Johnson adviced.

"Why? If I forget something, I could just walk to my house and get it." I gave her a weird look.

"Huh? We're staying out of town." Mrs. Johnson replied.

"*cough* What?"

"Didn't your mom told you? We'll be visiting Billy's grandparents and staying there for atleast a week." She explained.

"Whoah, whoah, whoah. What? You're telling me that I'll be staying with you in your parents' house OUT of town?" I gawked at Mrs. Johnson.

"Well yes, I already explained to your mother and she trusts us. Besides, she'll call us every now and then." She assured me. "It's my parents' farm that were going to, it's a nice little house near the woods."

"It's in a forest!?" I exclaimed, but regretted it when my throat ached. I'm going to stay in a stinking house in the middle of nowhere!?

"No, no. It's just a little farther away than the town that were going to. Don't worry! It's safe, I promise besides, the fresh air will do you good. It'll just be for a week, we'll be back the day before christmas so it should be fine, right?"

She gave me a reassuring smile which somehow managed to calm me down, I couldn't care less about christmas but I can't believe mom agreed to this! Can't she just find someone else to watch me? You know what? I don't even need anyone to watch over me at all!

I went out of the car and hurriedly went inside our house using my own key. It's december and it's freezing! I ran up to my room with my backpack and took new clothes and a couple of pants and PJ's out of the closet. I grabbed my other short-sleeved hoodies, considering the cold weather and necessities
Maybe, shoes? Nah . . . I only need one pair.
Okay, phone, charger, laptop. Maybe the book I haven't finished yet, it will sure be boring when we arrive there.

Okay, now all I have to do is make these things fit into my backpack. I managed to place the clothes I needed inside, and pushed it further so I could make my laptop fit in. I tried to close the zipper but it won't, I kept on struggling, trying to close it but after a few minutes, I finally gave up.

I sighed as I took my it out, looks like no laptop for a week . . . Luckily, the book fits in, atleast I won't get bored.

I closed the zipper without fail and headed downstairs, I locked the door using the key and ran into the car, almost tripping because of the snow. I closed the car door and purposely threw my oversized backpack at Billy.

"Ow!" He yelped.

"Whoops, sorry." I nonchalantly replied as he glared at me.

"Okay, do you have everything you need?" Mrs. Johnson asked, I gave her a nod and Uncle Robert drove us away.

I looked out the window, I really don't like being with people whom I'm not used to . . .
Great, now I remember that I have to find a way to apologize to mom, then again, what was I thinking? saying those things to her . . . I messed up, big time.

I pulled my hoodie up and rolled my eyes when I caught Billy glaring at me. How old is he again? He looks older but definitely acts like a kid.

Whatever, I didn't even realize how tired I was. Being sick is really annoying, I need to rest, I closed my eyes, hoping to fall asleep.

I wish this week will pass by soon.
