Chapter 3 - What To Do When A Werewolf Shifts

Marissa blinked a couple times before the shock got through to her.

"Randy is that you?"

The wolf whined his affirmation.

She let out a suffering sigh as she ran her hand through her hair, "Well. Isn't this just peachy?"

She shook her head as she reached over for her broom and cleared the glass around where Randy still sat depressingly with his paws over his snout.

Marissa knelt down to his height, "Come here Randy. Don't worry, everything will be absolutely fine."

He got up and moved towards her. When he was close, she flicked his nose, "That is for angering  fricking shape-shifters."

She flicked his nose again, "And that is for breaking my expensive crystal jug when I told you not to break it."

He whined again as she moved forward but she only wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him tight, "Hun, I think we are in some major trouble," she said to him softly.

Randy and Marissa sat across from each other on her living room carpet. They had sat there staring for almost two hours now. It would be dawn soon.

Marissa was worried, "Do you know how to shift back?"

Randy got up to pace, shaking his head.

Marissa let out a sigh, "Well, somebody has know something."

All of a sudden she face-palmed herself.

There's this beautiful invention called the internet...

She reached for her laptop on the coffee table and opened up an internet explorer tab. Randy, who had come to sit beside her whined slightly.

"Fine!" She shut down explorer and loaded Chrome, "Happy now?"

Randy had hated explorer ever since it had "accidentally" deleted his work as he loaded it into an email to send to his professor when they were back at university.

Ever since, he had hounded her every time to make the same switch he had. But she was stuck in her ways and explorer had always been nice to her.

She typed into the search bar 'werewolves' but all that came up were links to the old interpretations of werewolves and some stupid link to a Wikipedia Buffyverse page which stated that some people hunted werewolves specifically to eat them.

Marissa suppressed a shiver and changed her search criteria.

What to do when a werewolf shifts.

What came was a forum for advice for supposed shifters. But there were links to some helpful tips.

"1. Make sure nobody else knows."

Marissa looked over to Randy, "Can you...like...sense if anyone's around?"

Randy nodded his head. Marissa waited but when Randy only kept looking at the screen, she flicked his nose again, "Well? Is there anyone?"

Randy shook his head, snickering at her worry. She let out a sigh and kept reading.

"2. A werewolf needs to be part of a pack in order to survive."

Marissa's brows scrunched up, "What the hell's a pack?"

Randy poked at her leg with his muzzle.

She lifted her brow as she asked, "You do know I can't speak wolf, don't you?"

He growled softly but she only rolled her eyes and typed it into the search bar.

"The Internet says that the term pack is like family, where everyone has a place in the social hierarchy."

She and Randy looked at each other before they were both laughing; Randy doing the wolf version whilst Marissa almost rolled on the floor.

"Yeah right!" Marissa laughed, "Randy, you don't do orders. Heaven only knows how I've wasted my breath on trying."

She looked down the rest of the page and stopped at one specific part:

When a shifter is newly shifted, they must be amongst their kind in order to survive their first full moon shift. If not, there may be deadly consequences to those within their immediate area.

Marissa's blood ran cold. She stared at the screen reading the words deadly consequences for almost two minutes before she was shutting her laptop and running around her house.

"Randy, we're going back to the lodge!" she called as she started picking up her keys and her coat.

She opened the front door and waited for Randy to go out before locking it. She opened the car door for him and he jumped into the front seat before she got in.

She was just starting the car's ignition before she remembered that it was almost sunrise and Randy was not wearing anything but his wolf fur.

What if he shifts back and his butt-naked ass touched my car seats?

She went back into her house and looked around for some things Randy had left the last time he had been hiding out from a crazy ex-girlfriend. She didn't even know why they latched onto Randy the way they did.

He just seemed to make women insane till they leaped over the obsessed girlfriend line and made it all the way into Nutsville County.

She found some of his clothes, grabbed them all and then ran back to the car and shoved them into the backseat where Randy had jumped into.

As she sat down again, she heard his stomach rumble which had her running back into her house, grabbing as many perishable foods that she could and water in case he had really bad breath, and a first aid kit-she was a vet and this was Randy- then ran back to the car once and for all.

"Ok Randy. Back we go before anything terrible happens to you or anyone else."

Randy whined in response as she pulled down the windows and drove back onto the road the way she'd come only two hours ago.

Marissa was tired. She'd somehow forgotten some of the directions, Randy had been giving them to her as she drove his in-pain self all the way back.

By the time she had stopped for gas and directions, they were about five hours away and two hours had been wasted.

She rubbed a hand across her eyes and looked back across the now orange sky to the clear and empty motor way.

"Looks like the road untraveled if you ask me." She said to herself.

Suddenly, there was a bright flash of light and she almost swerved completely off the road.

Quickly righting herself, she let out a sigh of relief and leaned back in her seat, "Damn it! Thank goodness I don't buckle under stress."

"Yeah, otherwise we both would have been tossed like salads out there," came from behind her.

Letting out a squeal of fright, she stomped so hard on the breaks that even Randy was yelling in shock as the car went out of control.
