Chapter 31 - Just Trust

Marissa stared at the ceiling as if it held all the answers to the questions that were having a mad tea party in her head.

She was still upset that her necklace was gone, possibly forever if the Fates were being really cruel to her. But, she had to let that pain go. She'd done the right thing in letting Regan throw it because if she hadn't then the shifters in this pack would have been in danger and so would she if they ever suspected her of being a traitor. Her mind was at ease on that, but there was something else causing chaos in her head.

Roman had kissed her. Plain and simple. It had been soft and tender and fleeting. That was the problem. It had been something that she'd wanted and that was what was confusing the normally function brain that was now probably goo in her head.

Admit it, you like him, the familiar female voice chirped in.

Since the voice was a figment of her imagination, she didn't see any harm in having a logical conversation with it; emphasis on the logical. I guess, but I'm not sure about it.

What on earth are you not sure about? the voice asked exasperated.

Well...huh. The voice had a good point. What was she unsure about. She did have feelings for him. They seemed to be carnal, if her dreams were anything to go by, but she also felt for him in general. He'd carried her when she was injured and made sure that she and Randy, who was like her brother, safe. He'd made sure she ate so that she wasn't weak. He'd held her when the world had begun to crumble around her and he'd pulled back when kissing her probably because he'd felt that he was taking advantage of her.

And we have a winner! Just hurry up so that you can go and get the orb already. And just like that the voice tuned out of her mind.

Marissa just rolled her eyes. Of course the voice in the back of her head kept insisting that she go and get the orb because it was her ticket away from here. But, she wasn't sure if she wanted away from here. Sure, she was happy where she was. She had a house and a job. But now...her only true friend was here, her father was on a cruise and there wasn't anything that she could really go back to.

Wait, am I actually planning to stay here? she asked herself. The thought made her completely speechless.

Luckily for her, her thoughts were put on hold when the bathroom door opened and she looked over to see Roman stepping out of the bathroom. He was still wet from his shower and she had no problem with any of that...especially as she was just enjoying the view of him in just a towel. At that moment, her mind just couldn't form any thoughts even if she'd tried. Droplets of water snaked their way down his chest, falling down sculpted abs that she seemed to have dreamt of perfect and heading straight for the edge of that towel.

When he looked to the bed where she lay, she turned her gaze back up to the ceiling, not wanting to seem like a peeping tom, despite that being what she actually was at that moment. She kept her gaze up at the ceiling as she heard him softly step around the bed and open a chest of drawers. She took another peep, despite trying to tell herself that she shouldn't tempt a lion with a stake - or in this case a panther. The water was falling from his hair and droplets were snaking their way down across his broad shoulders and down his back.

She snapped her eyes back to the ceiling as he turned around and made his way with whatever he'd taken from the drawer back to the bathroom and shut the door behind him.

Well, now who'd ignoring the big elephant in the room? her mind taunted. She just shook her head and threw that can of thinking right out of her head. It wouldn't be a good idea if she overthought about situations when it came to her and Roman. He was a guy, and if she was being honest, sometimes they didn't tend to think before they reacted - pretty much what she did almost all the time.

When the door opened again, Roman stepped into the room in just a pair of shorts and she had to be careful not to swallow her tongue. He came over to the bed and grabbed a pillow before heading back towards the door that lead out to the living room.

"Hey, where do you think you're going?" she asked him as she sat up.

He stopped and turned to face her, "Well it's pretty late and I thought I was going to go and throw a party. Where did you think I was going?"

His infectious humour made her smile before she snapped out of it, "Hardy har har, but seriously, where are you going?"

It was his turn to roll his eyes, "To sleep on the sofa."

Her brows furrowed, "Why?"

He crossed his arms over his chest, drawing her attention to his lean muscles for a moment before she looked back to his face, "Because someone is currently occupying my bed and I don't think I want to get in an argument with her about it."

Marissa blushed at both her stupidity for not realizing that and for taking his bed, "No way, let me take the sofa. You need the sleep more than I do."

He raised a brow at her, a move she hated because her father used to do the same thing to her just to annoy her, "Do you think I have no manners or something just because part of me is a wild animal?"

Marissa blinked at him before she opened her mouth and said the first thing that popped into her head, "Sleep with me."

The room was silent and she played back that statement before she realized what she'd said, "No! I meant sleep in the bed with me." He just looked at her with a slight smile on his lips and she found herself floundering to explain herself, "Not like that either...I just meant we can share the bed. We are adults right?"

He was still for a moment before he moved back towards the bed and put the pillow, down. She moved under the covers and rolled onto her side, facing away from him. She still felt the bed dip as he lay down on the opposite side, and heard his soft groan as he finally relaxed on the bed.

As he turned out the lights, she felt a sort of easy peace fall over her. Her thoughts weren't crazed, her mind was just falling blank slowly and soon she found herself just at the point before a person fell asleep.

"Roman?" she asked softly, trying to stop a yawn from escaping.

"Yeah?" his voice was smooth in the darkness and wrapped around her, making her relax even further.

"Thank you," she said. She wasn't sure what she was thanking him for, but at that moment she fell into an easy sleep for the first time in days with no dreams or anything to wake her up.

She barely heard his quiet, "Your welcome," before she was asleep.
