Chapter 18 - Tips On Being A Shifter
Marissa let the hot water spill over her and was thankful for the soothing warmth and clarity it gave her. She almost groaned at how her muscles all let go of the tension and strain, her body relaxing and releasing the fumes that she'd been running on for the past two days now with no sleep except her brief stints unconscious.
She'd been chased, captured, locked in handcuffs, escaped, jumped into a burning building, jumped out of a burning building, escaped again then, discovered a traitor then managed to stop her body leaping at someone she did not want to tangle with.
But did you want to get away from him? asked a strange voice at the back of her head.
Marissa blinked, barely managing to keep the shampoo out of her eyes. She didn't recognise the thought so she just wasn't going to listen to it. She tried to lave the soap up on her head more, but it was difficult with just one hand. The other she had to keep dry and despite being under the water for about ten minutes, she'd done pretty well so far.
You can't evade something that's there just because you want to, the strange voice said again.
This time Marissa felt the sting in her eyes and quickly washed them out.
Don't worry, your brain's just melting from the sleep deprivation. Nothing to worry about, she tried convincing herself.
Yes, I'm definitely something your making up in your head; that's why I have a strange voice and you can't seem to shut me up. The voice was snide in its remark but Marissa didn't care.
Whatever you are, you aren't real. Now shut up and leave me alone! she snapped back at the voice.
But I can't leave you alone. I'm a part of you.
As she dried her hair, she began chanting, "Shut up, shut up, shut up!"
"Mer! Everything alright in there?" she heard Randy in the other room.
"Uh, yeah! Everything's fine in here. Did you bring me any clothes?" She called out to him as she took a breath to calm herself and try and shut the voice out of her mind.
You can't really shut me out you know, the voice told her. She could almost see the eye roll.
Yeah, but I can block you out with something else. Then she started blasting in her head the stupidest loudest song she could handle. Justin Bieber's Baby started playing through her head and despite the fact that she wanted to gag, it made the voice recede too.
She let out a sigh and stuck her head out the door. Randy was looking around Roman's bedroom, which was just outside the bathroom, and was just about to open one of the drawers to a chest of drawers. "Hey! Knock that off!" she whisper-shouted at him, not wanting to shout and burst his newly-sensitive ear drums.
Randy spun around to her and smiled. She smiled back at him, "Hey, how're you feeling?"
He shrugged his shoulders, "Okay, I guess but I don't really like being inside."
"Huh," she said, "Nothing's really changed then. Only reason you ever came inside was when there was something really important about to happen inside or you wanted to sleep on your huge marshmallow of a bed."
His grin was a boyish as it was wolfish, "Yep. Still plain old me."
She snorted, "Plain is a little to weak a word Rand. No hand me those clothes."
