Chapter 8 - Electric Shock
Roman barely had a seconds notice before Marissa feinted.
He jumped forward, just catching her in his arms before she hit the ground and clenching his jaw at the scent of blood he could smell wafting in strong waves from her. He hoisted her up into his arms, making sure to avoid her skin where he thought there may be burnt.
When he heard a growl from her wolf companion, he turned to him. "Follow me right now," he told him in his commanding alpha voice.
The wolf bowed its head slightly, but he could see the defiance in the wolf's eyes.
Good, he's going to need it if he's to protect his friend.
Roman headed away from the burnt house that had been the guest house and towards the main pack house. It was the only building that wasn't built of wood and everyone should be relatively safe there in comparison to the other houses.
He walked past pack members that were all running about and making sure to clean up the mess that the fires had caused.
The pack house was more like a hotel in that it was eight stories high, which was small in comparison to the tall ancient trees that shrouded them out here. There were bedrooms on every floor, enough to accommodate every pack member and anyone else that was visiting. The ground floor was the living room, the pack dining room and the kitchens. The first floor was the medical ward and as he headed up the stairs, he passed the people that had been brought in and were just now getting food to calm their nerves down.
On the first floor, all the doors were open and many of the nurses were running about whilst the pack doctor ordered them as he personally checked on one of the Pack Elders.
"Doc, we've got another one," he told him.
The Pack Doctor, Andrew, looked to him and saw Marissa in his arms, her shirt sleeve soaked in blood and the rest of her covered in soot. "Exam room 3 should be empty, put her in there and I'll take a look at her," he said as he turned back to the patient that he was currently stitching up.
"Hurry up Doc, she's human."
Andrew let out a sigh and waved over one of the nurses over to finish up his stitches and lead Roman and the wolf that was still following after him to an examination room.
It was completely sterile. The walls were a bare white; the window's curtains pulled back and the window open to air out the rooms. There was a counter with rows of shelves and drawers filled with medical equipment. A medical bed was pushed to the side of the room, but other than that there wasn't much else.
Roman placed Marissa on the table and moved back to stand by her head to let the doctor check her out.
The wolf moved forward but Roman just leaned down and grabbed him by the scruff of his neck, slid him back so that he stood behind him, and away from the Doctor who was much more important to him that the wolf or the human was, before standing back up.
Andrew moved over her, picking up her wrist and checking it against his watch. "Her heart rate is a little too elevated for a human," he mentioned lightly as he moved around to her head.
He lifted her eye lids and shone a small pen light into them. Quickly, he moved on to look in her nose and throat. He put the pen light back into the pocket of his white lab coat and looked at the gash on her arms and frowned, "It looks like she's lost a lot of blood and her lungs are slightly singed from all the smoke inhalation. Were was she?"
Roman folded his arms over his chest as Andrew moved to prep a local before injecting it into her arm, around the cut. He moved back to the supplies and picked up a pair of gloves. After putting them on, he took a small bowl and a pair of tweezers over to her side and lifted up her arm. Taking the tweezers, he began removing shards of glass from her arm.
