Chapter 32 - Natural Attraction

Roman woke in the morning comfortable, warm and for the first time in many years, at peace. He had no idea what had brought on this calm tranquillity but waking into it was something he couldn't forget.

He opened his eyes and looked to the left bedside table. His digital clock showed it was only five in the morning and he thought he could manage two  or three more hours of sleep before he really had to get up and begin the day's work. He had a list of things to do: check on Laura's house, interview the last two people seen coming out of her house during the fire and then come up with a plan so that they could get the orb back from Regan -and maybe beat him blind for what he did to Marissa.

He lay back and relaxed into his pillow. When he tried to move his arm, his addled brain finally woke up to the fact that something was laying on his arm. He opened his eyes and looked down to see Marissa was asleep right beside him.

Was she there when I fell asleep? he asked himself, trying to remember what he'd done just before he'd fallen asleep. When all he could remember was Marissa inviting him to take half the bed then promptly falling asleep with her back to him, he knew that something else was going on.

He looked down at the way she'd curled up beside him. She was half lying on his chest, one arm around his chest and the other curled up by his side.  Their legs were intertwined with the covers pushed to the bottom of the bed. His arm, which was only slightly going numb, was lying beneath her head whilst the other held her tightly to him.

How on Earth did we get into this position? his clouded brain asked, too sleepy and happy to really be alarmed by this.

Who cares?, his panther purred back, I like this position.

Roman had no idea how they'd gotten in this position but he had an inkling. The mating bond was something that tied two souls together until they both accepted the fact tat they were the other halves of each other. The things that made them fit weren't always visible, but there was still a link between them that they could not deny. When people tried to avoid the natural attraction that they had towards each other, it just brought them even closer together.

He looked down at her in his arms, her face serene and free of the pain that he knew was brimming below where no one else could see. Whilst he, and his panther, were loving the fact that she was finally not being distant or angry, or both at the same time, he didn't want to ruin what he had already achieved with her. If she woke up to find them like that, she may jump to the conclusion that he'd put her in that position. If that did happen, he would lose all the trust she had in him. He wanted her only to be happy and remain as carefree as she looked in that moment, and he was feeling more and more confident with each moment that he had with her that he could convince her to stay with him; he didn't want anything to jeopardize that.

He tried to move his arm a little and Marissa jut gripped on tighter to him, nuzzling his chest as she moved into a more comfortable position. He tried once more, and failed, before he just gave in and let himself go back to sleep, promising that he would wake up in two hours and untangle himself then.

When he woke up again, he found that he and Marissa were still tangled together and that he was still as happy as he had been when he'd woken up earlier. He rubbed at his eyes and tried to move again out of her arms but somehow, over night, she had gained super strength and she just wouldn't let him go. He had to carefully and slowly pull himself out of her grasp. As he was moving, he hit the right bedside table and nocked something over. He stayed absolutely still as Marissa almost woke up. Staying quiet, he waited until she fell back asleep again before moving to the edge of the bed.
