Chapter 39 - Held at Gunpoint

The shot echoed through the forest and clearly in Roman's ears. He waited for the twinge of pain that came with being shot but he didn't feel anything. He new Regan was a crack shot and for Roman not to have been hit meant the bullet had probably flown by. But that would have meant that it had hit something and he hadn't heart the dull thud of a metal bullet being stopped in its path.

Then the scent of flood filled the air. Marissa's blood.

The scent had him seeing red as he spun around to face Regan. The man looked dishevelled in a shirt and jeans torn from running through the forest after them, his golden glowing eyes were those of his wolf who looked to be very close to the surface, maybe eve in control of Regan at that moment. But the rifle that was focused on his heart looked pristine and despite the fact that the gun could have gone off and killed him at any moment, Roman was too blinded by his anger at Regan to care.

"That's a weak move Regan, hitting a human" he reprimanded, his voice low and menacing as he took a step towards him.

Regan was steady in his movements as he kept the gun aimed at Roman's heart, "Not weak. I prefer cunning. Getting rid of an Alpha's mate leaves him unstable and destroys a pack. All it would take is one little shot to her heart and everything would be back within my grasp." He swivelled the gun to aim at Marissa, who was standing beside him gripping tightly to the orb with one arm whilst her other arm was clutching her shoulder where there seemed to be a growing red stain through the cloak she'd been wearing.

But whether she held onto it that tightly in fear or in shock as she was told the truth was something that didn't come to his mind. He was too concerned with the fact that the gun was aimed at his mate. His panther was screaming at him to stay back and do anything to protect his mate. He wanted the same and refused to let Regan get a shot off anywhere near her. "Your fight is with me Regan!"

"Actually, it's with her. She's the one who took the orb and she's the one who lead you to it. Without her, my plan would have worked perfectly." He cocked the gun and Roman went on guard, a growl emanating from his chest.

"Tell me how you pulled it off," Regan said, his voice closer to a growl. When nobody said a word he aimed the gun at Roman and let a shot off. The bullet scraped his shoulder as he barely moved out of the bullet's path. Thankfully it had only scraped his shoulder instead of hitting it full on. However, a burning sensation started spreading thorough this shoulder and making its way down his arm and back and across his chest.

The bullet must have been silver that had been charged with a power that was directed towards messing with the tie between the being that touched it and their animal. As it was, the burning sensation made him sweat and his nerves kept shooting hammers at his skull and his breathing was getting a little difficult. And that was from a scrape from the charged bullet.

Regan moved the gun, aiming back at Marissa. "Tell me how you did it!" he yelled at them.

Marissa could feel the burn in her shoulder. The bullet that had hit her was still in there and her shoulder was bleeding a lot. Her head felt a little fuzzy from the shock and the pain that kept rattling her bones but she refused to make a sound . Regan looked to be on the edge, his eyes glowing and he just kept yelling. If she moved, he'd probably shoot and with the gun aimed at her chest, she didn't think she would survive the hit.

She tried to answer and just tell him what he wanted to know, but her mind kept latching onto this curiously giddy thought that she was Roman's mate.

That's why he wants me to stay, she thought wondrously.

Yes, at that moment it was very inappropriate, but her brain was going into shock and all she could do was think how happy she was at the thought that her and Roman could have a future if she chose to stay with him. But that was highly unlikely for two reasons.
