Chapter 14 - Lucky Tooth

Marissa made sure to memorize everything around her. The walls down here were pale blue, completely the opposite to everything she'd seen so far. There were picture frames hanging on walls and potted plants in every corner.

The kitchen was huge. There were four counters covered in food with people moving around them and heading through another archway. Roman lead her through the arch and to an even bigger dining room full of oak. The tables were mostly cleared of people but there were enough coming and going with food. A few women sat with a few human children and a few small animals too that she assumed were young children that had shifted.

Roman lead her over to an empty table. He put his laptop down, "I'm going to grab us both some food. Any allergies?"

She looked away and shook her head. She wanted to avoid looking at him at all at the moment; just until she'd calmed down from earlier. She heard him as he walked away and she risked a peek from the corner of her eyes.

His body was all sleek, lean muscle that she not only saw by how his worn clothes hugged him, but she'd felt them against her when she'd bumped into him on the stairs. Small shocks had lit up across her body as her senses went into overdrive - probably from her hunger. But that was it, which hunger?

She snapped out of her thoughts and tried to see what he was doing in the kitchen, keeping an eye on him as he loaded her plate. He wouldn't let her out of his site but she would do the same. He was her only way out of this place and there was no way she was going to let him forget about it. She just didn't want him to notice the effect he had on her.

She watched him load two plates with different foods. She couldn't clearly tell what the food was so she just paid attention to him. His movements were sleek and quick, nothing to tell her what kind of shifter he was but just as alluring. His eyes were the same. They turned green, so definitely a feline, but which one?

He looked up and she looked away. She'd been caught staring at him and by the slight twist to his lips, he'd found it amusing. His amusement burnt through her haze of lust. He probably had loads of women chasing after him; it fed his ego to know that she probably wanted him too. If it did, she just wouldn't give him any attention.

She looked away and focused on the table in front of her as he headed towards her. She was stilling looking down when a plate of food was placed before her.

"Eat up, there's plenty more where that came from," he said as he sat down.

"Yeah, I can see," she said back, ending the conversation before he drew her in and made her brain malfunction like before. She needed her full faculties around him.

He sighed and she knew she'd won this round. She picked up a French-fry from her plate and chewed on it, thinking about how even though she'd managed to evade a conversation with him for the moment, she still had to stay with him in his room. Even now, she was dying to ask him when he was going to go out and get started on hatching a plan to get the orb back.

She kept her inner turmoil in her head and tried to focus back on the full plate of food that she no longer felt like eating. The moment she did, she noticed that something was tugging on the bottom of her trousers. She looked down at her feet and found one of the small cubs trying to climb her leg.

"Hello, there," she smiled at the cub. Bringing it up onto her lap, she could see it was a bear cub, a boy. He sat on his hind legs and stretched out his arms towards her. She held onto his paws with her hands, feeling his claws and how they'd been filed down. She took a quick look just to see that they'd been naturally filed to sharpen them.

She looked back into the eyes of the bear and say the whites, something not natural in normal bears, so she was definitely dealing with a shifter. She smiled at how cute he looked and the cub tried to bite onto her fingers. She snapped a piece of her fish finger - a childish food but they had to get a good balance of omega three somehow - off of her plate.

The cub opened its mouth and chased after the bite until she gave in when it looked at her with its bright brown eyes. As it chewed on the bite, she noticed the cub wince before it swallowed. She let of the cubs paws and out her hand on its jaws.

"I promise it won't hurt, okay?" she asked the cub. The cub nodded and opened its jaw. Carefully, Marissa helped the cub open its jaw the whole way and looked in. Starting from the left side on the upper jaw, she pressed onto each tooth lightly and made sure to keep checking with the cub. When she got to a canine on the right side along the top jaw, she felt the cub move back, away from her.

"Shhh. There, there. I just need to see how loose this tooth I, okay?" The bear cub was hesitant but he slowly came back forward opened his jaw for her. She went back to the tooth and pressed against the gums of the tooth. She could feel the new tooth already pressing against it. When she lightly wiggled the tooth, it seemed to be only hanging on by a small bit of skin.

She picked up her napkin and looked back to the bear, "This may hurt a tiny little bit but it'll be better straight away. Okay?"

The cub nodded again and watched her as she placed the napkin over the very loose tooth and pulled on it ever so slightly. The tooth came out straight away and the cub only blinked. When she cut off another piece of the fish finger and gave it to him, he bounced on her lap happily and tried to reach for the tooth.

She opened up the napkin and showed the bear the small tooth. The cub tried reaching for it. But before he could get to it, his head snapped around as though his name was being called and he scrambled off her lap, leaving her with a tooth in her hand. She felt a pair of eyes on her and looked up to see Roman watching her with a strange look in his eyes.

She could feel her cheeks blushing as she looked back down at the tooth, "Um...what should I do with it?"

"Keep it. You can give it to him when you see him tomorrow at breakfast," Roman said.

She put the tooth aside and picked up her fork, moving the food around her plate, suddenly feeling not so hungry as she felt his eyes still on her.

A/N: So who wouldn't want to cuddle up to a bear cub? They aren't all dangerous, right? At least, the picture of him on the side doesn't look dangerous :3
