Chapter 4 - Sneezing Oil

The car would have rolled if hadn't been for Randy reaching over the seat and grabbing onto the wheel.

As it was, they thankfully came to a stop in the middle of the road.

Marissa just sat there staring at the two pairs of hands on her steering wheel. Hers and his.

For a second she just sat there before she erupted into a loud streak of profanity that had Randy pulling back his hands quickly as though he'd been burned.

She almost turned around to face him, when he shouted, "Don't turn around Mer! I'm not...decent."

She let out a disgusted sigh and got out of the car. She leaned back against the door and looked up at the sky, "I swear, this is just some sort of doggy punishment from the ones I neutered, isn't it?"

My poor clean car has touched his  naked but and...she couldn't finish the thought.

The car door opened and Randy came out and stood next to Marissa. She turned to him, "Is there some reason you wanted us off the road? I mean, I don't know about you but I do want to live through...whatever this fiasco is."

Randy just hugged her and held on tight.

"Um, Randy....I can't breath."

He loosened his hold and she took in a breath as she held onto him too. Patting him on the back, she spoke softly, "Don't worry, we will get through this. I promise."

He nodded but held onto her anyway.

They stayed like that for a few more moments before he let go of her and both of them climbed back into the car and started driving, Randy taking the wheel because Marissa was too sleepy and still severely too pissed to be driving.

"Mer, wake up!" Randy called to her, waking her from her much needed nap.

Her eyes snapped open as the sound of her engine spitting a dark cloud into the air reached her ears.

"What on earth...?" she asked as the car came to a stop on the side of the road.

Randy hit the wheel, "Damn it! The engine's bust."

Marissa rubbed the grit out of her eyes and looked around. They were still on the road but the desert freeway they had been travelling along before had flattened out and a forest had sprouted among the rocks that went on for miles on both sides of the road.

She let out a sigh and took a map out of her glove compartment. On it, she knew the road to the lodge had been marked in with a black marker; the kind man at the gas station having marked down which way she needed to go.

Randy took the map before she had a chance to read it and traced his finger along the black line.

The sound of scrunching paper had her quickly snatching the map back before he completely destroyed it.

"What's the big idea?" she asked, flattening a part of it.

Randy leaned back in the driver's chair, snarling like a petulant child, "I don't know where we are on it and it pisses me off."

She rolled her eyes, and looked to the map. She knew where they had been the last time they had stopped. She looked for other signs on the map, like the forest that had begun to spring up around them, the small hills and anything else she could spot.

When she finally found where they were, she sighed in relief.

"Randy, here's the good news. We are only about five miles from the next town then after that it's about another 30miles or so to the foot of the mountain."
