Chapter 21 - Don't Make Me Mad
Marissa was fuming.
She was stuck in her burnt and smoke-splotched jeans and this skanky pink tank top that barely covered her stomach. She kept having to pull it down, then she'd remember that doing that made two very good friends say hello to a laughing Randy who sat across the table from her and Roman who just kept coughing, his eyes laughing but a very light blush lighting up across his defined cheek bones.
Damn it! She scolded herself as she pulled the top down again then quickly had to put it up as people starting turning to see why Randy was choking on air. Glaring at him, she almost growled. "I'm going to get you back for this," she mouthed at him instead; it wasn't polite to growl at animals, especially if you were the only human and each one of them might take offense and eat you up for breakfast.
When the food was finally being passed around to their table, she loaded her plate. She hadn't eaten properly yesterday and really needed food now, but she also wanted to distract herself from the fact that Randy was still smiling like the smug brat he was.
She picked up the knife on the side of the plate, her hand clenching and an urge to throw it at his head looking more and more appetising by the moment. She felt a warm palm settle over her hand, making her drop the knife in shock.
She looked up to Roman who only smiled at her, "Forget about him. He isn't worth it." When she saw that he was trying to hold back laughter too, she got even angrier.
"You have no idea who you're messing with," she almost roared at him.
"Hey, Roman! If I were you, I'd actually listen to her, she doesn't make promises she can't keep," joked Randy as his fit of laughter started to spreading to other people who were listening to the conversation.
Logically, Marissa understood that they weren't the people that she was really angry at. That however, did not mean that they could just laugh at her and her emotions were very fickle beasts. She tried to calm down, letting out a long suffering sigh and decided to tuck into the food that had been piling onto her plate.
The beef bacon was delicious and the scrambled eggs on toast, her absolute favourite, were perfect. Soon, everyone lost interest in her and she lost all thought of them. The food and shovelling it all in quick enough were her only priorities at that moment. It seemed the same for the rest of them.
Don't you just love how food makes people come together?, a familiar voice chirped up in the back of her head.
Don't you know to leave people alone when they're having a beautiful moment with their breakfast? She muttered back, scooping another forkful of scrambled eggs into her mouth.
Well, I don't know about beautiful moments but shouldn't it be between you and, say...gee, I dunno...the hunk that stole your dreams last night? The voice joked back at her.
Marissa was so shocked by that statement that she actually froze with the fork half way to her mouth. Nobody thankfully noticed because everyone was tucking into their food. She shook her head and tried to slow down so that she wouldn't choke the second another shocking statement like that came out of her malfunctioning brain's very imaginative figment.
What the hell! First of all, no dream peaking into other dreams.
Um, I think you mean perfectly reasonable fantasies.
Stay away from him! she shrieked back at the voice.
There was a moment of silence where she could only hear the sounds of people around her chatting and eating. The voice had gone absolutely silent and there was nothing for a few moments.
