Chapter 6 - The Dragon Orb

"Hang on a second!" Mr Cute guy said, interrupting her story.

Marissa gave herself a mental slap. This line of thinking was stupid. A guy that tied her up and forced her to tell him a story was everything far away from cute.

Yeah, he's an insane and dominating cute guy.

She mentally groaned and tried focusing on his words.

"-gold and had a strange pattern inside it?" he asked again, leaning forward so he came more into the weak light.

His dark hair brushed his jaw and his features sharpened as he leaned forward. His eyes were large and a deep green as he looked at her.

He held all her focus and she focused on him with all her will.

"What did the glass ball look like?"

"Oh," she blinked. "Um, it was kind of small and sort of amber coloured and-"

"Did it have a a dragon painted onto it's surface?" he growled at her.

Marissa looked at him like he was being rude for interrupting her, not that she wasn't completely terrified that he was about to shift and tear her to pieces if she didn't answer him.

"Will you calm the heck down with this inquisition?" she screeched at him, trying to make him back off.

He only growled and moved closer.

"What. Did. It. Look. Like." The question came out harsh.

Some of her ire evaporated and she took a shallow breath, "It was amber, had a black shape moving around inside it and sort of hummed. I can't tell you anything more than that."

He leaned back, away from her, and ran a hand through his hair. Right now, he looked slightly relieved, but Marissa could still see the calculating look in his eyes.

She took a breath to calm her outrageous heart rate and asked the question that had been galloping a mile a minute through her mind since she'd first ended up in this situation, "What exactly is this 'Dragon Orb' anyway?"

The man didn't move a single inch from where he stood. All he did was look at her and stare.

It was silent, tense, for a few moments before he answered her.

"It's priceless."

She waited for more.

When it didn't come she raised her eyebrow at him, "Anything more to add, Mr Silent and Brooding?"

His brow crinkled slightly and the corner of his mouth twitched before he stopped it.

"The Dragon Orb is an ancient relic that my pack has cared for for centuries. It was what protected us and kept all of us safe and prosperous."

"So? It isn't like you can't do that on your own. I hate to say this, and trust me I really do, but you could probably wipe out any human that came close enough to see your house. Am I right?"

His lips twitched again.

"Yes. Ordinarily, you would be correct. However, the orb had a....safe clause, if you will. If it is lost or taken from where it is supposed to rest for more that two days, the pack that lost it will have all their fortune reversed--"

He froze, his head tilting at an angle as though he heard something.

He cursed under his breath as he spun around to the door and opened it hastily.
