Chapter 30 - Revenge Brings People Together
The second he knew Regan was gone and had completely left their pack's territory, he spun back to Marissa and raced up to her, not caring that he was still in his panther form. But Marissa was no longer standing behind him. Instead she was racing up the river with the current and trying to find something in the water.
He chased after her, making sure to keep an eye on the necklace that she was trying to grab a hold of as it raced by on the water current. Just as she was about to reach it, It slipped into the centre of the stream and sped away too quickly for her or him to catch it. She slowed down, her footsteps gradually slowing before she fell to the ground onto her knees and just watched after it until her legs were completely submerged in the cold water.
Quickly, knowing that his mate needed him, he shifted back to his human form. Grabbing a pair of sweatpants off of one of the rocks, he dressed quickly before going to lift her from the water before setting her on the edge of the river embankment and taking the spot next to her. She didn't look at him, her eyes tearing up as they watched after the necklace that was too far gone for her to see anymore.
"It's gone," her voice whispered brokenly.
"What is Marissa?" he asked trying to understand what pain Regan had caused his mate so he would not only tear the man apart but try and fix this problem for her. He hugged her close to his side, trying to keep himself modestly covered as best as he could without clothing.
She sniffed and he felt a pang of pain in his chest. For all he'd seen of Marissa, he'd never seen her break down. Not a single tear, not a single sniffle until now. "Marissa, please, tell me what's wrong," he begged of her. He couldn't stand to see her in this much pain.
Regan is going to pay with his life when I get my hands on him, he vowed darkly. His panther paced within, agreeing wholeheartedly with that statement.
Marissa's arms moved around him, holding on to him tightly. He placed his arms around her, giving her his silent comfort and waiting for her to confide in him. They sat like that, her holding onto him as though she was in a storm and he was the only steady rock she could hold onto without being carried away, for minutes on end without a single word being shared but a moment that would tie them together forever.
"It was my necklace," she said, her words soft and muffled as they came out against his chest.
Roman thought back to everything that he'd found out since he'd met Marissa. Then he remembered what Randy had told him, "Your medical alert tag?" She nodded but he was still confused. Why would she react this way to losing a medical alert tag that she could just reorder off of the internet?
He didn't ask but soon enough, she was explaining it to him. "The necklace had my mother's wedding ring on it. When she walked out on me and my father, she tossed it at him saying that she didn't love him anymore. He was heartbroken. The only way I could bring him out of his catatonic state was to take the ring myself and tell him that I would wear it forever because I would always love him. He was my father; I would have done anything to keep him with me, to bring him back from where my mother had sent him. When he came back, the ring became a symbol of the pact we'd made to stay together."
Once Roman realized the value of the necklace, he wanted to get up and chase either it up the river to stop his mates tears or go after Regan and tear him limb from limb. "I'm so sorry Marissa. I'm sorry that for us you had to give up something you treasured just to keep us safe." He hugged her tightly to his side. Marissa just shook her head and clung to him just as tightly.
Together, by the river, they sat holding onto each other as their emotions raged and sparked embers in their hearts. His panther was clawing for his chance at payback and for their mate, Roman was willing to get bloody.
"Marissa, I don't know if I can fix this for you, but I promise you that we will get him back for this." He moved his hand to her cheek, wiping away the tears he could with his thumb.
Marissa sniffed and moved back, tilting her head up to look up at him. There were still a few tears in her eyes but he could see the fire that he knew she held within. Her anger had finally returned and Marissa was back.
"Good, and I'm going to help." Her devious smile lit up her face and he couldn't help but smile back. That passion that lit her up from within was infectious and he didn't want to be cautious. He wanted to glory and burn in its flames alongside her.
Stroking her cheek with his thumb and looking into her eyes, he had no idea what was running through his head, but what he did know was that Marissa was his mate and for her, he would tear apart anything that ever hurt her. Leaning forward, their lips met and he made that promise to her, silent but true to his very soul.
A/N: OK, so I know that this chapter was seriously corny but what can I tell you, sappy romance is still beautiful and I think I just proved it :) Wish me luck because I only have today to finish ten more chapters. Gosh, I think I'm going to cry...Don't forget to comment and let me know what you think about sappy romance like this scene and if you think I did a good job, how about a gold star for my efforts? :3
