Chapter 35 - A Traitor Is Revealed

They knocked on the white door before they pushed it open. Cinna was packing a small bag at the end of her bed; Andrew had told them that she was fine enough to go home before they'd stepped in here. She looked over her shoulder at them as they entered and Marissa could have sworn she saw a flash of fear in Cinna's eyes before she turned back to her bag and was once more out of Marissa's sight.

"Cinna, how are you feeling?" Marissa asked. She tried to keep her voice soft so as not to spook her.

"I'm feeling much better, thank you," she chirped. There were very minute tremors in her voice that even Marissa picked up on.

"Cinna, we need the truth from you about the fire," Roman said gently. Marissa could see how much he was fighting the urge to just shout and rage about how she had betrayed the pack. She was extremely proud.

Cinna just kept packing away things into her bag, "I already told you the truth. I went to return a cooking pot-"

Marissa moved forward and placed her hands on Cinna's, "Cinna, we checked. The pot was in the kitchen. You said you smelt the smoke and went in. Why would you have gone to the kitchen if the fire was too hot in there?"

When voiced aloud, Marissa didn't know why she hadn't seen the truth before. Cinna had said that she'd also sent out the alert, but then she'd been in the house with Stanley looking for Vera at the same time. There were so many little details that they'd overlooked but now they all made sense.

Beneath her hands, Cinna clenched hers but she didn't make a peep. Marissa moved her to the bed and sat her down next to her. "Cinna, just tell us the truth. nothing bad will happen." Cinna remained silent. Marissa let out a sigh before she carried on, "We know that you set the fire in the house. Just tell us why."

There was a tense silence before a tear escaped Cinna's eyes, "I didn't know."

"What?" Marissa asked.

"I didn't know that they had gone home!" Cinna's anguished cry began the onslaught of tears that fell down her face. "I thought Laura and Vera would be out until after I had gone in and set the fire. But when I saw that there was a pie in the oven that looked just about done, I knew it was too late and ran out of the house. I waited for the smoke to build up then I ran back in and tried to help get them out so that they wouldn't be suspicious of me.  I tried to find Vera but by then, the smoke was too much for me to handle and the fire had set on too quickly." She leaned against Marissa crying and clinging to her arm.

Marissa pulled her into a hug, "There, there. Just tell us why. We need to understand why you did all this Cinna."

Cinna sniffed, "I found my mate...but he's in Regan's pack."

Roman stood by the door and Marissa could see that he was making a fist. She just focused on Cinna, "Go on."

"Well, I was terrified that Roman wouldn't accept him because he'd think that he was a spy for Regan so I asked to move to his pack. Regan said I could, but I had to prove that I was loyal. He said I had to spy for him and tell him anything that was of major importance." She looked up at Marissa, a crazed panic in her eyes, "I had no choice! He was my mate!" Then she broke out in more tears, her hands covering her face.

Marissa hugged the girl whose sobs shook her entire body. "Cinna, everything will be fine. We understand what you were doing and in the end, nobody got hurt."

Roman came forward, the anger lessened in his shoulders, and knelt by Cinna's feet. He pulled one of her hands away from her face. Holding onto it, he looked into her eyes, "Cinna, nothing is going to happen to you."

"But...I...betrayed my pack," she sobbed.

"You did it for your mate. Anyone else would have done the same thing if they had been in your position. I understand why you did what you did. I just wish you had come and spoken to me about it. I would have given him a home here just like I gave you one." That just made her cry harder.

Marissa held Cinna tighter, "Everything will be fine. We can still fix this, but you have to be willing to fight to get your mate. Can you do that?"

Cinna looked up at her, sniffing, but managed to nod.
