Chapter Ten
Dylan’s P.O.V
Nate was…not what I expected. Not that I really expected him. But all I could think about, was how easily he had said ‘Finn.’ Amanda and her family said it so carefully and with such emotion. Nate just said it like it was nothing, with no emotion behind it. I didn’t know who the guy was, but I know he was important and was hard to talk about. Not to mention that I never knew that Amanda had a brother.
I opened my eyes, instantly seeing Amanda’s living room. I looked to my left and saw her sitting on the couch beside me, looking straight ahead stiffly. What happened to her? She looked so uncomfortable. Even though it was her house. Maybe she thought it was bad for me to fall asleep like I did? Oh no. what if I did something wrong? Or swore in my sleep?
“I’m gonna go to the bathroom.” I muttered, standing up and going into the hallway. Then I stopped. What door was it? I looked at the five doors in the long wall way. How did I do this so easily last time? I just stopped in front of a door on the left side of the hallway and pushed it open.
I blinked at the sight in front of me. It was so clean! It was so pink! I knew that Amanda loved pink, but I never knew she loved it this much. I stepped into Amanda’s room. The walls were white with an occasional big pink flower, and the furniture was white, along with a big white fluffy rug, but she had pink everything else.
I walked up to her desk, seeing papers with her neat handwriting on them. But the only thing that stood out on her desk, was a picture frame. It was white with pink flowers. But that’s not what stood out. It was the picture within it. It was of a little girl with long blonde hair up in pigtails, a pink dress on that was nice and clean. But there were two boys around the girl. The girl was showing off a smile that was missing lots of teeth, and the boys weren’t showing their teeth. One had his arm around the girl. The other was standing behind her, leaning his forearms on her shoulders.
They looked good together. It kind of reminded me of a lone flower in the middle of a field of grass. I recognized the girl instantly though. It was Amanda. The girl had her features, her smile, her hair, her bright eyes, and I also recognized one guy. The one with his arm around her, was Nate. He looked quite a bit older than her. The other, was a mystery. Nate and Amanda both had blonde hair, but the other had brown hair. The color of Amanda’s father. Her mother was the one with blonde hair. The one with dark hair, looked almost upset. Even though he was smiling, you could tell something was troubling him underneath the surface.
Who was he? He didn’t look like he fit in. He also seemed like the middle child. He seemed younger than Nate, but still a good bit older than Amanda. Who was he?! He had her eyes, and her smile. So who was he? He had to be related to her, but how? A cousin? No. He looked too much like her to be a cousin. Could she have another brother?
I took the picture frame in my hand, and carried it with me to the living room. Amanda was sitting on the couch, a strawberry in her hand now. She looked up at me with a amusement in her eyes. “Another fifteen minutes? Really? Is this a habit of yours?”
“No, not really.” I mumbled, then showed her the picture frame. “Who is the one behind you?”
She looked at the ground, strawberry forgotten in her hands. “It’s Finn.”
“Where is he? Who is he?”
“Finn, is my older brother. My other, older brother. I wasn’t very close to him, but I was still close enough to have it hurt like hell…I know I swore. When he was in high school, he got mixed in with alcohol. He was a people person, loved to party, and loved to drink and often come home late. But he had his days. We would spend Saturdays together. Nate, Finn, and I, playing board games until I either got tired of losing, or got too tired in general. But when Finn was in his senior year, and I was in elementary school, he died. He was leaving to go to a party after having a big fight with my parents, and was driven off the road by a drunk driver. It’s why I don’t drink. It’s why I got close to God. It’s why my parents are never around. I had his eyes and smile, so whenever they saw me, they thought of him.” She told me quietly.
I would never have guessed that the happy go-lucky girl I knew, would be one with emotional issues and family issues. I would never have guessed that she had a brother die. Hell, I didn’t even know she had a brother to begin with.
“I still loved him, and it still hurt when he died. Nate left a year after Finn died because he was tired of the way my parents treated me and him. I never thought he would come back. It was terrible.”
I sat down next to her, and put one arm around her, pulling her to me, trying to be comforting. It must have worked, because she threw the strawberry on the table, and turned to bury her face in my chest, tears pooling in them. I wrapped my other arm around her too, trying not to feel uncomfortable. But it was hard because it felt so damn right to have her in my arms like this.
I rubbed her back. I looked at the picture frame that I had set on the table in front of the couch. The three people smiled back at me. I never would have guessed that Amanda would be like this. But now that I’m getting to know her…I’m starting to like it. But…Sam. No, I don’t like her. I really don’t. Right? Right. No doubts…right? I don’t know. Maybe. What’s going on? No girl had ever made me feel that way. My hearts beating hard, I was surprised she didn’t hear it. But, maybe she did. I wanted her to be closer to me. Even though she was already so close. What did I get myself into?
